Barbara's obituary
Barbara Crowe passed away on April 29th, 2024 at Maple Ridge Memory Care in Essex Junction, Vermont at the age of 86. She was surrounded by many who loved her dearly.
Barb was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and a supportive friend. She was born in 1937 and grew up in New Brunswick, Canada. Barb met her husband George when they were just 14 years old. They lived across the pond from each other and often skated back and forth to visit one another. They married in 1957 and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary before George passed away in 2019.
Barb was a caretaker to countless people fortunate enough to cross paths with her. Whether it was the students who lived in her dorm, the players she coached in tennis at both Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, the Dartmouth Hockey players who referred to her as “Mrs. Coach” or the countless residents she worked with at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. She thrived on making those around her feel loved, protected, and valued.
Barb was an avid athlete, always on the move. Very few people in her lifetime could keep up with her and compete at her level whether it was playing tennis, skiing, paddle tennis, or golf. In her younger years, Barb was a nationally-ranked tennis player.
Barb had a zest for life, was feisty, and had a great sense of humor. She had the ability to tell-it-as-it-is and bring lightness and laughter to any situation. She valued humility and instilled that attitude in her loved ones. Those who knew her well didn’t mind that Barb would serve up a piece of humble pie when needed, as it was always from a place of love and growth.
Barb’s recent years were spent in Enfield, New Hampshire, at their home on Mascoma Lake. Barb was a vital member of the Mascoma Lake Association. She volunteered endlessly and made sure when anyone new moved into her neighborhood they were welcomed with open arms.
In their later years, Barbara and George spent time at Riverwood in Port Charlotte, Florida. There they played tennis, golf, biked, and spent time at the beach. They road-tripped with their friends in Florida to Key West for Jimmy Buffet week for many years. The stories told from that week were endless.
Barbara will be dearly missed by her three daughters Cynthia Crowe, Patti Crowe Schoening (Randy), Wendy Crowe Watson (Brad), and her 5 grandchildren, Ben Messier (Laura), Jessica Beall (Charley), Carly Watson (Pete), Jackson Watson and Taylor Owen (Jordan). “Mums” was blessed with 5 great-grandchildren.
Barb’s family thanks the staff at Maple Ridge Memory Care and Dhyanna Lucia for the care and support they provided to Barb as she battled Alzheimer’s. Barb’s life will be celebrated at the Shaker Museum on Lake Mascoma in Enfield, NH on Saturday, June 1st at 3 pm.
