Barbara's obituary
Barbara Truitt Hassell Colley, 74, of Prattville, Alabama, departed for her Heavenly home on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 after a brief fight with pancreatic cancer. Mrs. Colley was born in Alabama on April 1, 1951 to James and Mary Anne (Shine) Truitt and adopted by Ray and Louise Hubbard. Barbara attended Stanhope Elmore High School and graduated in 1969. After graduation she married Mike Hassell; they welcomed two sons, John and Jeff Hassell. Aside from a few years spent living in Germany and Florida, Barbara was a lifelong resident of Alabama.
There were two things Barbara believed in wholeheartedly: the love of Jesus Christ and Tupperware. She was always happy to talk to anyone about both. She began selling Tupperware in 1974 and never stopped. The quintessential Tupperware Lady, she rose quickly to a managerial position and, over her years with the company, enjoyed numerous accolades.
A woman of deep faith, Barbara was a member of Brush Poppers Cowboy Church and she loved serving her church family and the community beyond. For many years she helped build families through her work at Grace Place Pregnancy Center (now River Region Pregnancy Center). And she helped others learn of the redemptive power of Christ through her work in prison ministry.
Barbara played many roles in life but her most cherished was that of Granny Barbara. She loved spending time with her grandkids whether it was dinner out, bowling, movie nights, or days at the park.
In 2019 Barbara married James Colley. They enjoyed working in ministry and praying together, traveling, and playing dominoes.
Barbara is survived by her husband, James Colley, her sons John (Christy) and Jeff (Tara) Hassell, step-daughter Kim (Mike) Colvert, grandchildren Brandon, Taylor, and Jordan Hassell, Carey, Stephanie, and Richard Colvert, brothers Jimmy (Dixie) Truitt, Michael Truitt, Steve Parker, Dennis Hubbard and Don Hubbard, sisters Linda (Jerry) Harvey and Debbie (MIchael) Lusk, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members (some through biology, some through marriage, all through love).
Though she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, Barbara leaves a wonderful legacy of faith, humor, love, and optimism.
Per her request her body has been donated to UAB Medical School. A memorial service will be held at Brush Poppers Cowboy Church at a future date.
