Barbara's obituary
Barbara graduated from Winthrop College in 1956 with a degree in History and Library Science and worked for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for seven years before beginning a family. Barbara and John adopted four children who were the love and focus of her life.
For the next 20 years Barbara devoted her time to managing all the children’s countless activities outside of school, including dance and music lessons and swim team. Barbara was instrumental in allowing each child to grow and flourish in the community.
As the children grew older, Barbara returned to the workplace and taught preschool at Though-the-Week School at Myers Park Baptist Church for 26 years where she gained tremendous satisfaction and joy having a positive impact on young children in their formative years. Barbara and John were married for a total of 46 years until John’s passing in 2002 and they were members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte.
In her retirement years Barbara enjoyed her unique home and property in Waxhaw that her husband designed and self-built. She was an avid plant lover and tended her gardens daily, she appreciated nature’s beauty and all creatures. She loved to read and learn. Barbara stayed active and mentally engaged with weekly Tai-Chi and Senior Scholar classes at the Cornwell Center.
Barbara is survived by her daughters and sons-in laws, Irene and Steve Robertson of Roanoke, VA, and Carolyn and Jeff Taylor of Denver, NC; sons and daughters-in-laws Ralph and Deborah Bass of Brooklyn, NY and Eric and Diana Bass of Lake Wylie, SC; grandchildren Kristin and Anna Robertson, Camille and Jody Taylor, and Ralph Joaquin (RJ) Bass; sister and brother-in-law Gail and Richard Brewer of N. Charleston, SC.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Barbara’s wishes were that memorial contributions be made either to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte or Through-the-Week School at Myers Park Baptist Church, information on each below.
