Avril's obituary

AVRIL’S LIFE JOURNEY . . .

She left a legacy of love and devotion to her God, her family, and her profession.

Avril Cecily Parris Cassimy was born on February 27, 1953 in Trinidad and Tobago. She was the eighth of nine children born to Eugene and Cecily Parris.  A young Avril experienced the joys of island living, immersing herself in Caribbean culture and attending Tranquility Secondary School. Later in life, she immigrated to Canada and then to the United States, where she settled and made her home for most of her adult life.

Avril was a career educator and a lifelong learner. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education at Andrews University, a master’s degree in education at National University, and was in the final phase of completing her doctorate at Walden University at the time of her passing. Avril specialized in elementary education and taught grades 4, 5, and 6 across the country, including Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas, Illinois, and Michigan. She was totally committed to her profession and to the mission of providing students the tools and skills to learn.

Family was very import to Avril. She was married to Dr. Glenn Cassimy for 38 years, and they were blessed with two wonderful sons, Evrod and Evan, as well as three grandchildren. Being a devoted and loving mother and grandmother was the joy of her life. She was very proud of her sons and often touted their many achievements.

Among her other life pleasures were jet skiing, watching motor biking and car racing, taking long adventurous drives, eating toolum (her favorite Trini treat), and socializing with friends and meeting new people. She was quite fashionable, which complemented her outgoing and engaging personality.

Above all, Avril’s greatest life passion was her spiritual relationship with God and her faith community. She was a devout Seventh-day Adventist for most of her life, having been baptized in her youth (age 14) at the Stanmore Avenue SDA Church in Trinidad. After her retirement, Avril settled in Riverside, California, to be near her younger son, Evan. While living there, she began fellowshipping with the Kansas Avenue SDA Church at the end of the COVID pandemic. She thoroughly enjoyed the worship experience and the loving friendships she formed at the church.

After a brief, yet valiant, battle with cancer, Avril went to her rest peacefully in the Lord at age 71 on February 1, 2025. Left to celebrate her life and legacy of love and family devotion are her two sons: Evrod (& Danielle) Cassimy and Evan Cassimy; her three grandchildren: Malakai, Shae and Chloe; her siblings: Lorna, June, Sandra, and Lennox; as well as other loved ones and friends in the household of faith. Avril was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Alan; and her sisters, Una, Eurice, and Jackie.

While we mourn Avril’s passing and will miss her greatly, we rejoice in Jesus’ promise of eternal life on Resurrection Morning, when we will be reunited and dwell in the house of the Lord together forever. Amen.
