Avis's obituary
Avis Ann Smith Fortado passed away on May 12, 2022 surrounded by over 20 members of her family, leaving an incredible legacy of love. She was born on August 8, 1944 in Brownwood, Texas to Avis Ann and B.L. Smith Jr. After graduating from Paducah High School, she attended Texas Tech University and Midwestern State. She earned the esteemed achievement of Silver Life Master in Bridge in 2021.
She married the love of her life, Michael Fortado on March 12, 1964. She loved raising her three children, doting on her grandchildren, playing cards with friends, volunteering, traveling and spending time at the lakehouse. She was the pillar of her family and entertained family gatherings of 50 or more regularly. She always brought the fun, love and great times.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Michael Fortado, her children, Scott (Laura) Fortado, Angela (Eric) Buchen, Shannon (John) Castans and grandchildren Michael (Danielle) Fortado, Elizabeth Fortado, Matthew Fortado, Blake Buchen, Emily Avis Buchen, Grace Buchen, Connor Castans, Jack Castans, and Caroline Castans as well as her siblings, Ben (Ellen) Smith, Marilyn (Phil) Richards, Laura (Waylon) Jeter and 28 nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
She will be remembered for her unconditional love, her gift of encouragement and support, her strong faith, her spirit of fun, her priority of family and her bright smile. She was a true treasure and joy.
A celebration of life service will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church On May 24, 2022 at 3:00 pm with a reception to follow.
