Background
On May 14th, 2018, Avery Raymond Burkhart passed away due to injuries suffered in a head on collision car crash. Just 9 short days before he was to graduate Summa cum laude with the Hedgesville High School Class of 2018, Avery kissed this world goodbye and flew to Jesus.
Avery was a member of the National Honor Society. He received his gold sash on 5/7/2018. Exactly one week later he would be gone from this earth. Forever in our hearts and Always on our minds.
Sadly, Avery would never have the opportunity to proudly wear his NHS pin, sash and summa cum laude medal with his cap and gown. Avery would never walk across the stage to receive his diploma.
Avery’s Celebration of Life ceremony was held on 5/19/2018, the same day as the HHS Alumni Banquet and the same day he would have learned he was the recipient of one of the Hedgesville High School Alumni Scholarships.
Additionally, Avery had taken the SAT and ACT tests numerous times trying to become eligible for the Promise Scholarship. After his final attempt on 5/5/2018, Avery decided he was done taking the tests. When I asked him how he did, he responded that he felt he did the worst out of all of his attempts and felt there was no way his scores would be good enough to meet the Promise Scholarship requirements. On 6/7/2018, 24 days after Avery passed, I received notification that Avery had been awarded the Promise Scholarship. Avery’s scores were in fact good enough and all of his hard work paid off!!!
Lastly, when I inquired about Avery’s final G.P.A. and class ranking, I was informed that Avery graduated in 51st place out of 295 students with a G.P.A. of 3.96.
Avery never knew of these accomplishments.
In 2017, Avery drafted a Bucket List. He listed a total of 26 items with #13 on his Bucket list reading "Make an impact on someone's life."
As his Mother, I am incredibly proud of Avery and consider it an honor to carry on his legacy. Checking off #13 never gets old.
I knew right away I wanted to offer a scholastic scholarship in Avery’s memory. Without hesitation the HHS Alumni agreed to gift the first $1,000 ( they gifted the scholarship Avery would have received to start the memorial scholarship). At the Senior Award Ceremony, much to my surprise, the Class of 2018 gifted an additional $3,000 to the scholarship funds which would be awarded in $1,000 increments over the next 3 years to Avery's Underclassman. My coworkers and colleagues at BB&T, also donated funds toward the scholarship, along with countless others who shall remain anonymous.
We are beyond blessed to be part of such an amazing community!! The love and support we continue to receive and feel every day reminds us that God’s Promise is true when he says “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted “ Matthew 5:4. We find comfort in knowing Avery will never be forgotten as his legacy lives on in the lives of those we impact.
