Ava's obituary

Ava Jacqueline Weinberg, née Brahen, age 70, resident of Philadelphia, PA, died suddenly on May 31, 2021, after several years of declining health. A loving mother, she is survived by her son, Daniel and his partner Justin Lockwood, both of New York, NY. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Weinberg.

Ava grew up in the Logan neighborhood of Philadelphia, the only child of Sarah and Joe. She grew up surrounded by music, as Sarah and Joe were avid musicians: Joe wrote a Rocky Mountain Symphony while stationed in Colorado during WWII, and Sarah gave piano lessons until the 1970's. Ava was a Beatles fan, and a local newspaper ran a photograph of her celebrating her 14th birthday with cakes Sarah had decorated to look like the band members. Ava graduated from Olney High School and Temple University, and hoped to attend graduate school to study vocational therapy for people with disabilities, but unfortunately wasn't accepted. She held various jobs such as radio DJ, life insurance telemarketer, flea market vendor, and substitute teacher, as well as a six-month stint at a button factory in Boston, MA. She loved to travel and fondly remembered trips to Nova Scotia and Florida to visit cousins.

She took great pride in staying at home to raise Daniel. She taught him to read and play chess at an early age, and after Frank died, she got him his first dog, computer, and electronic piano keyboard. After raising Daniel in Newark, DE and Northeast Philadelphia, she lived in personal care homes in Olney, Germantown, and the Northeast.

A self-described “tide-bucker,” Ava enjoyed writing poetry, eating seafood, playing guitar, and dancing to the latest music on the radio.
