I met Augie as part of a meeting of representatives and General Managers of water agencies and CSDA in San Diego. I immediately liked Augie as a positive and helpful man to work with. When I told him that I had previously been a Police Officer he shared that he had been one also. That sealed a long-term relationship and we later shared that we both believed in Jesus Christ as our Lord! I know that he is in heaven now and I am thankful to know that! I’m

I worked with and for Augie Caires for 30 years as his CFO and fellow Board member.  He repaired a broken organization in the mid 90's by instituting the EIT-Employee Involvement Team. He converted a combative employee-employer relationship to an organization where all input was valued.  Today, Padre Dam is known as a great place to work largely from Augie's organizational influence. As his CFO, Augie allowed me the opportunity to change the department and create financial systems that had not previously existed. His strong faith in God and Family led him throughout his life. I am privileged to have known him and have his guidance. He was a great light in my life. I will miss him and always cherish our time together. I'm sure God has greeted Augie with open arms saying, "Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant".
Augie, thank you for demonstrating to me what it means to live a life of purpose. To live a life with an eternal perspective. Thank you for showing me what it looks like to be a faithful husband, a loving father, a dedicated grandfather, a self-less leader, a true follower of Jesus, and a good friend! I will miss you greatly but am so thankful for your life and the tremendous impact it has had on so many.
To the Caires Family--As you well know, Augie was a very special man.  His positivity, his faith, and his love of his family always left such an impression on me.  I first met Augie in 1997 when I was a brand new attorney working with BBK--while I was not experienced or seasoned then, he always treated me with respect and always made sure to let me know that he valued my input.  His mentorship and friendship throughout the years have meant so much to me and I am sure to countless others as well.  Thank you for sharing Augie with us all.  All my love, Paula de Sousa
For me Augie was one of those people who had that ability to listen to something, understand it, then explain it back so it was easy to follow without getting lost in details. He was always fair/diplomatic and did a lot of things at Padre Dam. Two things that come to mind first are always EIT and giving employees day off for President Reagan’s funeral. Thanks for everything Augie. My thoughts are with your friends and family.

My first memories of Augie are from Chabot College, where Leslie and I stalked him around the campus. She thought he was the cutest thing ever, and anywhere she saw his vehicle, we would hang out to see if she could see him. We were seventeen and eighteen, and she was totally smitten. Still is to this day.

Dear Caires Family,

I want to give you my sincerest condolences. I have the pleasure of working with Augie for 22 years. I remember my first day of work, fresh out of college and joining Padre Dam. Augie made it a point to meet with everyone as soon as possible. He had so many specific questions about me to was clear he wanted to know me and welcome me to Padre Dam. Augie's support and example inspired me to Public Service and Leadership in the Water Industry. I do my best to be a leader that Augie would be proud of and I meet with all new staff with thoughtful questions and interest in who they are. Thank you Augie for your inspiration and support. You will be missed.

Dear Caires Family,

During this difficult time I want to give my sincerest condolences. Loosing a loved one is an extremely difficult thing in life, and we are left with heartache and sorrow. May you and and your family find in comfort in knowing that our God Jehovah deeply cares for you and your family. He will soon reverse the effects of death by bringing a resurrection. John 5:28,29 says: “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” May this promise that will soon be fulfilled give you strength.

I was so sorry to hear about Augie’s passing.  He was such a  great guy!  I loved his commitment to the Lord, Family, and Friends.

Rest in the Lord’s arms, you’ve made it to the promised land.

My sincere condolences to Augie's family.  As I recall, he was dedicated to his family & when he spoke of them, his love for them shined through.
So sad to lose this great man.  He was so easy going that I used to joke that he would sign a piece of bread if it was put in front of him.  In realty, his decisions were thoughtfully considered and gently delivered.  I feel honored to have worked at Padre Dam under his leadership, both as a General Manager and as a Board member.

Augie will always hold a special place in my heart. As Padre Dam’s GM, he hired me to work for him and the Board of Directors. I was very fortunate to work directly for him early in my career, grow under his servant leadership, and get to know him and his family through their visits to the office and the many stories he shared. After he retired, I was thrilled he decided to apply to fill the vacancy created on the Board. He was always kind, compassionate and a devoted family man whose dedication and excellent leadership over the years continued to have great influence on my professional and personal growth.

I am grateful his fellow Board Members gave us the opportunity to recognize his many accomplishments, outstanding leadership and commitment to public service by renaming the District’s office the August A. Caires Customer Service Center before he passed. The photo below is a picture of Augie in his office when we moved into our new building in 2006 and is a great reflection of how he carried himself everyday… always with a smile. I will miss him tremendously.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the privilege of working for Augie for several years. He cared about the employees, and the district. He was a great mentor and friend, always a smile on his face. He will be missed by all. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

A life well lived! So sorry to hear of Augie’s passing.  He was my first boss at Chabot College when I was just getting started on my education and professional law enforcement journey as a 17 year old freshman and student campus security officer.  Augie was never far from his pipe, a habit that I picked up for a while.  And all of us smiled at Augie’s daily (at least) visits to the school’s administration offices to see his future bride Leslie.

Augie may not have known what a mentor he had been to so many.  Perhaps he may have talked with Leslie about what a difficult young man I had been.  I was quite the pain in Augie’s side—he even had to fire me for setting off fireworks in our locker room on the 4th of July! Despite my rough start, I hope he would have been proud (and certainly surprised) that I went on to have a successful career, retiring from both the Hayward Police as a sergeant, and the Navy as a lieutenant commander.  Thank you Augie for helping lay the foundation.

 May God bless your soul.

Sad to lose a great friend. Celebrate the life he lived. Blessings.
