Audrey's obituary
Audrey Aileen Sagers was born in Toronto, Canada February 6, 1921. As a young lady and it being war time, in order to change occupations, she had to go through a National Employment Agency which she did. She was offered a job as Executive Secretary to the President of Tropical Oil Co. in Barranca Bermeja, Columbia, SA. On her way to her new position, the plane was delayed in Jamaica, and she missed her connection in Barranquilla, Colombia. There she met the man she married 5 months later in Bogota, Colombia. Edward D. Steel was chief meteorologist for Avianca Airways. They lived in Barranquilla, Colombia, SA; Panama, CA; San Juan, Puerto Rico (where Jeffrey was born) and Miami, FL where Paul and Ginger were born. Edward Steel died in 1954.
She remarried to James Cresswell, had daughter Jann Audrey and lived in Miami Springs. While there she was President of the OptiMrs. Club; President of Fern Garden Club; President of the Adult Bible Class (with over 100 members), and Secretary of the building committee of Grace Lutheran Church.
She later remarried to Stanley Sagers and moved to Sarasota in 1971. She joined Northminster Presbyterian Church where she became an Elder, a Deacon and was on various committees. She retired her position Asst. Vice President, Marketing at United First Federal S & L, which later became Barnett Bank, after 18 years.
Audrey was Secretary of the Sarasota Art Association; was chairman of the Juried Plaza Art Show, United First Federal for fifteen years; a patron of the Annual Orchid Shows and Hibiscus Shows; treasurer of Virginia Slims Tennis Tournaments in Sarasota, volunteer at Selby Gardens with biologist Margaret Lowman and was very active in the Arts Community for which she received recognition. She was a patron of the National League of American Pen Women for numerous years, President of the Woman's Exchange and a good friend to many artists in Sarasota.
She leaves behind four children, Ginger (and Ed) Smietana, Paul Steel, Jeffrey (and Betty) Steel and Jann Johnson. Also, five grandsons: Lee, Shawn, Aldin, Marli, Kyle, one granddaughter, Katelyn and great-grandchildren Beau, Caris, Maddox, Drayk, Zoie, Odin and Alexandria.
She had a most interesting and exciting life. Stanley Sagers died in May of 2003.
She loved the Lord.
Services will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3131 61st Street, Sarasota, Florida,
Wednesday September 7th, 2022 at 2pm.
