Sonny's obituary
Asher “Sonny” Ray Brunes
November 26, 1957 – April 21, 2026
Asher “Sonny” Ray Brunes, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21st, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and music. Born on November 26, 1957, to Asher and Deloris Brunes, Sonny grew up in the Indianapolis area and graduated from Carmel High School in 1976.
Sonny dedicated much of his life to his family’s business, Carmel Engineering in Westfield, Indiana, where he worked from approximately 1981 to 2010. He was known for his easygoing nature and ability to make friends wherever he went, though many of his closest friendships were formed through his love of bowling.
Music was one of Sonny’s greatest joys. He had a deep appreciation for classic sounds, especially those featuring a steel guitar. Whether listening to favorites like Henry Mancini, George Strait, Alabama, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, or Conway Twitty, Sonny could often be found tapping his legs, smiling wide, and playing along with his finger drums.
Above all, Sonny was a devoted and proud father to his three children: Ashley (Greg) Burgess, Amber (James) Gardner, and Auston (Hanna) Brunes. He was also a deeply proud grandfather to Carson, Simon, Rohen, Rhett, Raylynn, Jameson, Huxton, Lawson, and Gavin. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and his presence will be deeply missed.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Asher and Deloris Brunes, and his beloved grandson, Rhett Brunes.
A private, intimate celebration of life will be held by the family to honor Sonny’s life and the many memories he leaves behind.
Sonny will be remembered for his warm spirit, his love of music, and the joy he brought to those around him.
