Arthur's obituary
Arthur Palmer Spierre
(July 27, 1944 – March 13, 2022)
Arthur Palmer Spierre passed away at the age of 77 from complications with cancer on March 13, 2022 in his winter home in Polk City, Florida. He was surrounded and cared for by family and friends during his last few days of life.
Art was born in Albany, NY on July 27, 1944 to Jonathan and Grace (Fletcher) Spierre. He grew up in the town of East Greenbush, NY as the only child where he graduated from Columbia High School in 1962. He started his own construction business at age 19 and was a volunteer firefighter in his local community. He met the love of his life, Jill, in 1978 and they were married December 1, 1978. Together they raised four children in West Sand Lake, NY. Art and Jill moved to Chestertown, NY in 2001 where they had purchased property on Loon Lake. In 2006 they bought land in Polk City , Florida where they would spend their winters together as snow-birds.
Art spent most of his time growing his construction business. Over the years, he built hundreds of stick, log, custom and modular homes in the capital region of NY. He had an admirable work ethic and a knack for managing a business. He was a plumber, an electrician, a mechanic, a woodworker and could take a fully wooded lot to a custom finished home in a few short months. He didn’t just construct houses; he gave the community homes for families to live and grow. This includes the log home his own family grew up in, countless model homes for his business, homes for his children and their families, and a custom Adirondack chalet lake house built in 1998, where Art and Jill spent many recent summers together in the Adirondacks of upstate NY.
Art loved the water. Growing up, his family spent summers on Lake George. Art loved to water ski and to sail. He owned four sailboats over his lifetime, all with the name WindyWo, and he often sailed his family to the islands of Lake George for weekend camping. Art also found much joy owning and maintaining his father’s 1965 wooden Lyman inboard speed boat with the name “Ajonagra”, a combination of his name and the names of his parents.
Art also loved to travel and felt most comfortable traveling by RV. He drove the family all over the country and Canada for vacations. Art and Jill in recent years traveled to Alaska, Arizona, Canadian Maritimes, The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Circle of Utah, and the Florida Keys to name a few. Their home in Polk City Florida is in a motorcoach community where he made many friends who share love for traveling by RV.
Art enjoyed and owned numerous antique cars. These included a 1955 Ford Thunderbird, 1968 Chevy Corvette, 1931 Ford Street Rod, 1940 Buick Opra Coupe, 1951 Chevy 5 window truck, 1973 Ford mustang convertible which he enjoyed working on with his son Jeff. Art liked attending car shows and entering his cars. He won dozens of trophies for his meticulously maintained vehicles.
Art is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jill Spierre of Chestertown, NY, his son Jeffrey Spierre of Poestenkill, New York, his son John Spierre (Louise) of St. John, Florida, his daughter Susan Clark (William) of Fairport, New York, his daughter Kimberly Ross (Derek) of West Sand Lake, New York, his grandchildren Jeanine Spierre, Joshua Spierre, James Spierre, Elizabeth Spierre, Collyn Ross and Ellie Clark.
A celebration of life will be held in West Sand Lake, NY in the coming months. Details are yet to be determined on location and time. Please send memorial donations to Salem United Methodist Church at 349 Shaver Road, West Sand Lake, New York.
