I first met Arthur when he attended an advisory meeting at Alcon 2001. I was VP of Sales for Alcon’s Pharmaceutical Division.  Art and I became fast friends while developing strategies for how Alcon can best bring therapeutics to Optometrists nationwide.  We would often challenge each other over dinner and a couple bottles of wine.

Art’s  creative mind and straightforward communication helped lead Alcon to launch ophthalmic therapeutics to Optometrists across the U.S. for the first time in history.

Art and I developed a life long friendship that transcends any business relationship that brought us together initially.

Happy Birthday Dr Epstein. You are greatly missed by many. I will always remember you and appreciate the person who believed me when no one else did. Dry eye took over my life and you were there to help me finds ways to manage it to gain my life back. You cared when no one else did. Thank you
I am very sorry to hear about Arthur’s passing. He was a phenomenal and caring professional who helped me overcome my eye issues that no one else could. To this day I am grateful for his kindness and ability to improve his patients quality of life. He made a great impact on the world. My heart goes out to his family.

I was so sorry to hear about Arthur's passing. He was such a helpful and encouraging person. He advised me to 'never give up' looking for help with my eyes. It took so long to find him, I am so sad and discouraged. He can't be replaced.
Was thinking of Art quite a bit lately with the upcoming optometry meetings...Miss connecting with him and his presence in so many peoples lives....truly missed!
Thinking about Dr. Steinhauser, their family, and the staff as they mark a difficult milestone. Prayers for you.
Heartfelt condolences to Dr Steinhauser and her family and the Phoenix Eye Care staff.  I am so sorry for your loss.

Art was a champion for optometry.  He was always willing to help out his fellow ODs and not feeling threatened  by OD neighbors down the road from his practice. He was a great scientist and clinician.  Art always had optometry's back as evidenced in his articles in his online newsletter.  He is a great role model for future ODs to emulate. We miss you, Art!

We send our condolences to Dr Steinhauser and her family, including the family/staff at Phoenix Eye Care.

We will always be grateful for Dr Epstein’s care and kind support. He was very generous with his time and talent. He made a positive impact on so many lives and will be missed dearly.  Rich and Peg K.

After the shock that came with news of Art's passing and the ensuing sadness, my thoughts turned to gratitude - gratitude at how fortunate the world has been to have Art with us, positively changing so many lives. We all wish his time on earth could have been longer, but he had more impact during that time than most of us. Over the years, I got to know Art, as we occasionally both spoke at the same meetings, he on clinical topics and I on the politics of our profession, particilarly when I was president of our world body, WCO. Over the years we corresponded, became friends, and took time at meetings to sit and chat whenever we could. I will miss him and those discussions, but I am one of throngs who are grateful to have benefitted from his presence among us.

My thoughts and prayers are with Art and his family.

Sorry for the loss of this great person. He was one of my first mentors when he added me to his practice while I was doing my Cornea Residency at SUNY. . I actually convinced him to become a Fellow of the Academy and served as his sponsor ( a little role reversal). He will be missed.

Shannon, I just wanted to send my condolences to you, your family, and all of the staff at Phoenix Eye Care.

I first met Art 11 years ago when I was serving on active duty with the Air Force. I was assigned to the Pentagon and was the president of a regional optometric society for Federal service ODs (military ODs, VA ODs, and the like). Art was our featured speaker for a CE event at the FDA in Silver Spring, MD. We all felt lucky to have Art as the speaker knowing his outstanding reputation and his involvement educating the public about the Fusarium outbreak.

Since that time, I had been keeping in touch with Art regularly, multiple times per year, usually through email. He has always been incredibly generous with his time and always willing to share his knowledge and expertise. Art helped shape my approach to dry eye management. I always enjoyed reading Optometric Physician and getting his insights into different topics and aspects of dry eye care.

Art was friendly, approachable, not afraid to share his opinions, and simply a great guy. I'm already missing not being able to shoot him the occasional email just to catch up on things not even health care related.

Shannon, again I am truly sorry for your loss. I know that you will carry on his legacy well with Optometric Physician. Take care.

My deepest condolences to you and everybody there at the office. My heart aches for his wife and family, the staff at the office. Sending my prayers that you may find peace.

I will truly miss him and his kind words. I will miss visiting with him and his help with my eyes!! He's truly one of a kind and an amazing dr. I will forever indebted to him and Dr Lappin and the staff for helping me with all of the treatments to my eyes.
From my first appointment with him, he had a way of making me feel that he cared about my eye problems, about me and was always so kind in giving me hope. I truly loved our visit whether it was talking about my eyes, or politics or the troubles in our Country, it was just so enjoyable. I loved learning about his past, he’s religion and about his travels around the world about his seminars. Again he will be missed.
Sincerely Kathleen.
Dr. Epstein came to my rescue at a point in my life when my eyes were feeling horrific. He made time for me on my short trip to Phoenix from Canada. He told me he had to fix my eyes or it would be bad for US-Canada relations! Dr. Epstein was compassionate, friendly, funny, smart, respectful, an advocate and not afraid to express his opinions. His mission truly was to alleviate pain and suffering. The last time I saw him was virtually during the pandemic when we were both presenters at the Canadian Dry Eye Summit. I was grief-stricken when I heard I would not see him again on this earth. Rest in peace Dr. Epstein. I will always remember you with gratefulness. My condolences to Dr. Steinhauser and family as well as the wonderful people at Phoenix Eye Care.
My condolences go out to Dr. Steinhauser, her family, and the wonderful staff at PEC.  I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Epstein’s passing, and for your loss.
Our deepest condolences and sympathies. Dr. Epstein was doctor to almost our entire family (Katy, Aiden, Liam, and Evelyn) but our visits to see him and others in the office have always felt more like visiting family for the day. We all enjoyed talking with him about our eyes and anything else that would come up during our visits. On the way home, we'd always talk about wanting to invite him out for dinner to extend our talks into the evening and enjoy his company for even longer. We always felt blessed to have the best eye doctor in the US, if not the world, here to help us. That he was a sweet, honest, and genuine soul only magnify those feelings. We miss him deeply.

Ryan, Katy, Aiden, Liam, & Evelyn McGrew
I can’t express how sad I am. Dr. Epstein was very kind and compassionate.
He listened to my issues so intently that I felt that he cared about me. I felt so warm by just seeing him and taking with him. I believe that all of his patients felt same way as I did.

One time at his office for my routine dry eye appt, I was quickly explaining him about my terrible stomach issue I had . He listened much more than my gastroenterologist!! How sweet is that??

I will miss Dr. Epstein so much. I will never forget about him.

And I thank you for his wonderful staffs for also being very nice to me.
I am very grateful.

Thank you, Seiko

I contacted Dr. Epstein in 2015 via Facebook. I corresponded with him shortly about the optometry profession in Israel and its limited scope of practice. I'll always remember his comment on the subject: "Be patient. Change comes slowly, but it comes."

Dr. Epstein was a good person and clinician and he will be missed deeply.

Please accept my condolences.

I'm in total shock after hearing of Artie's passing, We were lifelong friends meeting as teenagers in the Bronx, NY. I was a few years older then him. We shared the same hobby, amateur radio.. His call was K2HI and I'm K2WE now living on the gulf coast of Florida. I have so many memories it would be impossible to list them all. I knew his parents and his brother Irwin. I remember the birth of his 2 daughters.. Over the years, we made over 20 trips to the big yearly ham radio convention in Dayton, Ohio. When we last spoke we talked about making a trip back to Dayton,, We both wanted to re-live the good times we had one more time.. To his wife, I just wanted to express my sorrow for your loss.. He was a life long friend I will miss dearly..
We will not be attending but would like you to know that our prayers are with you and your family.
