Armand's obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Armand André Jean Barthélémy on November 3, 2020 at the age of 26. Armand lost his life to a rare and aggressive form of cancer. He is survived by his father Hervé, mother Isabelle, sister Clemence, and husband Justin. He died peacefully at home surrounded by them.

Armand was born in Chartres, France to a loving family. He captured the joy of his parents and older sister, and seemed to give everyone he came across something to smile about. Childhood summers by the sea and cozy holidays at the family home, life for Armand was something to be discovered. He was crafty and curious from the start, always up to something, and astonishing his family with the cleverness of his latest project. He taught himself about anything from botany, to the art of aquascaping, to how to train a rat. Armand was eager to understand how things work, and more importantly, how he could make them work better.

His sharp mind came with a fierce sense of independence, and Armand was ready to carve out his own unique signature. After studying across France and abroad, he moved to Canada in 2017 to complete his Master’s of Science in Engineering at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. He then moved to Montreal to begin his career as a project manager with the software technology company INEAT. Before long, he met the love of his life too. They began to put in order their little piece of the world, and they filled it with life, joy, and wonder.

Armand possessed a gentleness and a kindness felt by everyone he met. Those who knew him well also recognized a rare sort of creative ingenuity – a way of finding elegant solutions to everyday problems. His style was disciplined and methodical, yet underlying it there was also a playfulness, which could appreciate in full the value of simple joys all around him. Armand was an avid hobbyist, and he cultivated beauty in many forms. His reef aquarium, orchid collection, and countless other gifts left planted on this Earth will continue to grow in his spirit and memory.

Armand’s family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to every doctor, nurse, and other professional involved in his care - especially at the McGill University Hospital Centre and the Société de soins palliatifs à domicile du Grand Montréal. A cremation has taken place, and small private gatherings are being held in Montreal until his ashes are repatriated to France at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a small donation in memoriam toward the Montreal Botanical Garden, where Armand found tranquility on cloudy days.
