Nutcracker ornament and brooc…
Nutcracker ornament and brooch - gifts from Arlene
Arlene became my Godmother in 1990. My mother Pat and Arlene met in the 1970s and were good friends. Since Arlene had no children of her own or in her immediate family, she seemed to really enjoy taking me places and spending time with me growing up. I remember going to her apartment in Brookline, taking me figure skating, seeing the Nutcracker Ballet in Boston, going to the Museum of Fine Arts and many other outings. She drove a yellow VW bug named Sunflower after her favorite flower that I will never forget. Arlene bought me a souvenir nutcracker ornament from our trip to the ballet that was my favorite Christmas ornament to put on the tree each year until it grew brittle and needed to be retired. When I was a young adult, she passed on to me one of her brooches that belonged to her grandmother that I will cherish in her memory. Arlene attended many of my family milestones over the years, including watching me perform in musicals, my wedding, and my baby shower. Sadly, my family and Arlene lost touch after my baby shower in 2013 due to her dementia. It wasn't until February of 2021 that Arlene's sister-in-law Donna reached out to me via Facebook - Donna had located a savings bond for me from Arlene in her personal effects! I had been worried about Arlene for several years after my Christmas cards started being returned in the mail. While I was glad to get some closure, I was sad to learn of her death. Due to the circumstances of her death, no obituary or death notice was ever published at the time in 2019, which explains why my Google searching for the past few years came up dry. I know Arlene touched others lives, especially in Brookline, and I hope this website will provide others with some closure as well.
Arlene, I love and cherish our time together when I was growing up. I only realize now as an adult the special Godmother-Goddaughter relationship we truly had. I am glad to have known you and miss you. I am sad you never got to meet my son Lincoln - I know you would have adored being a part of his life. Rest peacefully, Sunflower.
