Anthony (Tony)'s obituary
With sadness, we announce the passing of Anthony “Tony” Barton, Ph.D. (89) of Sewickley, PA on February 22, 2024 in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Barton was one of the founding faculty members of Duquesne University’s existential phenomenological psychology program. He was born in Paris, France on November 26, 1934. He came to Duquesne in 1960—after having met fellow founding faculty Adrian Van Kaam and Alice Wagstaff, while studying with Carl Rogers at the University of Chicago. His published writings included “Three Worlds of Therapy: An Existential-Phenomenological Study of the Therapies of Freud, Jung, and Rogers” and “Foundations of Psychotherapy: Therapeutic Communication & Transformation.” Dr. Barton spent nearly 60 years at Duquesne where he was always eager to discover new things and find new ways of engaging with his students. He was a therapist, mentor, colleague, and teacher to many—including his wife, Carolyn A. Deforest. A man of humor, adventure, and never-ending surprises, he will be missed. He is also survived by his sister Anne (William) Klemme, and seven children, Chris (Audrey) Barton, Catherine Peters, Greg (Merrie Beth) Barton, Theresa (Andrew) Sabatini, Karl (Melissa) Barton, Timothy (Lisa) Barton, and Allison (Zachariah) Paine plus 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was recently predeceased by his loving former wife and beloved mother of his six oldest children, Marilyn Barton, MA.
A celebration of Tony’s life will be held from 2-4 PM on March 17, 2024 at Duquesne University’s Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center in the Gumberg Library.
