Annie's obituary
In Loving Memory of Annie
With profound sorrow and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we celebrate the life of Annie Ruth Sykes. Annie, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and loyal friend, enriched generations of family and community with her love and presence.
Annie was a woman of remarkable strength, grace, and quiet determination. She carried herself with dignity and warmth, offering wisdom when it was needed and laughter when it was most welcome. Her smile could light up a room, and her words had a way of comforting even the heaviest heart. She believed deeply in family, in hard work, and in showing up for the people she loved and she did so faithfully throughout her life.
Professionally, Annie built an impressive financial management career in the music industry, working with PolyGram Records from April 26, 1971 to retirement on May 29, 1998. She took great pride in her work and carried herself with professionalism, integrity, and excellence. Her dedication and strong work ethic followed her into every chapter of her life, including the meaningful years she spent working alongside her son-in-law at his law firm. She valued purpose, independence, and contributing her talents wherever she could.
While she was accomplished in her career, Annie’s greatest joy was always her family. When her late father needed care, she returned home to Rocky Mount without hesitation, because if you needed Annie, she always answered the call. There was no problem she would not endeavor to solve for someone she loved. She leaves behind her beloved daughter, Lisa and her devoted son-in-law, Frank Morris II, Esq., of whom she was immensely proud. Nothing brought her more happiness than being “Grandma” to Ryan, Lauryn (her best friend), Nolan, and Frankie. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she celebrated each of their milestones with enthusiasm and unconditional love. Whether cheering them on, sharing stories and prayers, or simply sitting close by, she treasured every moment spent with them.
Annie is survived by her sister Gloria (Theodore Butler), who shared with her a lifetime of cherished memories. She leaves behind her Aunt Juanita, Uncle Bernard and Uncle John, as well as her cherished bonus children, Stephanie and Raymond. She is also survived by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a vast circle of close friends who became like family over the years. Her bonds with her extended family were strong and lasting, and she remained connected, supportive, and present in their lives.
Annie was preceded in death by her late husband Clifton C. Sykes, and her step son Clifton “Vince” Sykes; her Loving parents, Ella Mae Parker and William Lee Parker, whose strength and guidance shaped her life; her sisters Verna Dean, Sandra Diane, and Shirley Ann; her brothers Willie Lee and James Earl; and her nephews Willie Demetrius and Charles Lavon Parker. Though she endured the loss of many loved ones, she carried their memories with grace and continued to pour love into those who remained.
One of the most beautiful expressions of Annie’s love was found in her kitchen. She was especially known for her famous potato jacks, a dish that family and friends eagerly anticipated at every gathering. She delighted in preparing delicious meals and homemade desserts, filling her home with warmth, laughter, and the comforting aroma of food made with care. Holidays, celebrations, and even ordinary days were made special because Annie was cooking. For her, sharing a meal was sharing her heart.
Annie valued her friendships deeply. She nurtured lifelong relationships built on trust, humor, faith, and loyalty. Her close friends will remember her encouraging words, her gentle strength, and the countless conversations that provided comfort and clarity, often ending with an invitation to join her for her daily pastime: a trip to the Harrison Y, where she stayed active, both physically and socially.
Annie’s life was grounded in her devotion to God, as reflected in her fervent prayers for family, friends, and strangers alike—though, as anyone who knew her would say, Annie never met a stranger. She was a steady presence, a guiding light, and a nurturing spirit whose influence will continue through the many lives she touched.
Though our hearts ache in her absence, we are grateful for the time we were blessed to share with her. Her love remains woven into the fabric of our family, and her legacy will live on for generations to come.
She will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and always remembered.
May she rest in eternal peace.
