Never have I met a woman as independent and inspirational as Annemarie.  She created a successful business, did nearly all (maybe all!) the repairs on her home and property (driving by one day, I was shocked to see her slurry sealing her driveway!). She took pride in her health and figure; always in great shape and beautifully dressed.

I have fond memories of swimming in her lake-view pool, skiing and enjoying her delicious dinners at her lovely home.

She left too soon and will be missed.

My friend Anne Marie was a treasure for her beauty, her charm, and her determination. Swimmer, skier, hiker, mother, devoted wife, and pragmatist.
I first met her as a real estate student in 1976. I was director of the real estate school she attended. Being an immigrant from Austria, her English provided a double challenge for her to pass the state real estate exam. She was recently widowed and seeking a way to support her two adolescent children while finding a career with time to mother her family. Family was so important to her.
Her persistence and determination inspired me to tutor her in private and help her pass the test. During this time, we established a friendship of mutual respect and joy.
One of my gifts was a connection to the Casino Manager at the Sahara Tahoe. He arranged for us to have the best seats in the house for many fabulous shows. My strongest memory is of the evening we saw Liberace’s Extravagant and melodic show in 1976. Both of us reminiscent about this for the rest of her life.
Another memorable day was when we traveled to south shore to attend an auction at the Edgewood Country Club. It was a glorious day. Anne Marie saw the bronze dolphins to be installed by her pool. She said she paid more than she intended because there was a persistent man bidding against her. She was so excited when she won the auction.
The pool in the back yard of Fairview was one of the happiest places in my life. So many late afternoons on Saturday and Sundays in the summer were spent visiting in the chairs, then swimming in the pool, then enjoying light refreshments.
So many shared personal stories and observations. Always there were an assortment of Anne Marie’s friends that joined us. Seldom less than 3 never more than five. It was Anne Marie’s habit to make deviled eggs and nuts. My habit was to make croissant finger sandwiches with chicken salad and multination flag toothpicks to show our international friendship.
Another back yard memory besides the beautiful flowers that graced our joy was the beautiful statue of a deer which Anne Marie always said reminded her of Helmut. From the time I met her, she always shared that he was the love of her life. She told me about how they spent their honeymoon camping around Europe.
In her youth as a younger child in a large family, her mother had to keep the family alive and secure during WW II. They lived near a town on a farm. Her mother would send the family dog to town with a note for the baker and a saddle for bringing home fresh bread. She told me how her mother would pickle eggs to keep them fed in winter. How they would store root vegetable to survive the winters.
During her youth Anne Marie was an excellent skier. As I recall she qualified for the Olympics before she married. All her life until the last few years, she skied every winter and with her season’s pass would report how many days of skiing she got in. She would meet visitors and charm them with her Austrian accent and share her knowledge of Lake Tahoe and Incline Village.
Earlier in her time here in Incline she and Helmut helped design and create Ski Incline with other local Austrian immigrants.
One of her joys was her group of German speaking ladies. They had monthly meetings where they would gather at one home or another and speak German to keep their language skills fluent.
One of my joys was to find personal gifts that might please Anne Marie. At one point it was finding low priced swimsuits at an Outlet store. One year it was long colorful plastic sponge tubes that allowed us to float in the pool. They needed to be replaced regularly as the racoons and other wildlife attracted by the clean water in the pool liked to chew on them.
Whenever we were at the pool, it was fun to see the birds, chipmunks, and other small wildlife that would come to the pool for a drink. Since Anne Marie replaced the chlorine with an oxygen purification system, the wildlife was a joyful stream of small wonders.
When we were in the pool for years Anne Marie urged us to do aerobics exercises, not just to relax. It was fun to do synchronized exercises.
Anne Marie was a consummate builder and home maintenance expert. I remember her saying when a neighbor complained about construction noise, Anne Marie said it was a pleasure to hear the sound of hammering and building knowing that great new things were happening.
When I moved into my new home in 1998 Anne Marie came over and as a “house warming gift” repaired some gashes in the sheetrock done by the movers. She repaired and painted so all was “perfect” again.
When her son Michael was ready to buy his first home, Anne Marie asked me to help him obtain a great opportunity to get him started in real estate ownership. I was happy to help his education and launch him on a great future.
She loved her children more than anything else in life. She was so proud of both Michael and Doris.
She did love her round bed which was her bedroom’s crowing glory. For years she had to custom make sheets to enhance the bed that offered her a unique setting for a spectacular lake view from her morning wake up experience.
Anne Marie’s favorite holiday was Octoberfest. She would dress up in her Dirndl dress that make her look so young and curvaceous.
Her home was a tribute to her heritage. We had luscious meals. My favorite was when she cooked schnitzel in her lovely remodeled kitchen. The breakfast nook was straight out of the Black Forest. The turret that led to the street level garage had a functional elevator. Her installation of a chain barrier to all the cars that tried to turn around in her parking spaces was brilliant. She was very proud of defending her territory from the inconsiderate drivers who invaded her space.
I was always amazed at her home maintenance work even into her 70’s when she would get on the roof to make repairs. She was not intimidated by tall ladders to maintain the exterior of her home with patching and painting. Indeed she was working on maintenance when she had the fall that lead to her final illness. God bless her soul.

Annemarie was our wonderful neighbor for 18 years. She was always so thoughtful. We would find little surprises of beautiful flowers in our stairwell so many times! We loved her dearly and shared so many incredible memories, including the wildlife, such as the mountain lion, the bobcats, coyotes and deer that passed between our properties. Her story of the 800 pound bear that she watched try unsuccessfully to climb up our sheer outside wall brought tears of laughter to all of us! The times the raccoons tore up her swimming pool cover also brought tears, but of distress! She and George were always comparing notes on how to repair and maintain our respective properties and I was always amazed that she worked as hard as George. She loved her property so much and loved to share it with her family and friends. She is greatly missed !

I was sad when I heard the news of Annemarie's passing. She was such an integral part of her family. One of my favorite memories of Annmarie was when I met Annemarie, Doris and Chris for dinner while they were vacationing in Las Vegas together. She was so excited that night getting to spend time with Doris and Chris. Her energy was contagious and she was so full of life. Annemarie also wanted to see if I wanted to go see Australia's Thunder from Down Under show with her because she said it looked like a good time. Unfortunately I could not attend with her, I am sure we would have had an awesome time! I wish we could attend her celebration of life service, I am positive the day will be beautiful. Annemarie will be missed. Love, Kevin, Danielle and Kelsea Sweeney

An elegant, strong lady with great intelligence and heart. We were neighbors on Fairview and fortunate to have met Annemarie. We wish warm-hearted memories of the legacy she left for you all.

The Christmas Boat Parade with her was such a great time. Our family had just met her and she talked with us like we were old friends that she had known for years. A very kind woman with a heart of gold. So glad we were able to spend such a special holiday with her. You will be missed AnneMarie!

Annemarie walked often and I would often run into her walking up and down Fairview. She always asked after my husband and kids and was such a pleasure to talk to. What a lovely and gracious lady she was. I am so sorry for your loss.

I just learned of Annemarie’s passing tonight.
We have SO many wonderful memories of Annemarie, Helmut, Doris and Michael. They were so kind to us when we moved to Incline in 1969. She and I made many trips to Reno for shopping and lunches and she cooked wonderful dinners for us. Our kids Geoff and Nicole spent countless hours playing together. Gary and I visited Incline several years ago after 40+ years away and Annemarie treated us to lunch. I am devastated by this traguc bews.

I am so very sorry to hear of Annemarie's passing. She was a beloved client of mine at Sundance Salon for Nails for many years. We shared many of life's stories and her adventures over the years. I loved her and consider myself blessed to share in her life. She was such a tough girl and I always admired her zest for life and all it had to offer. She will be missed for sure.
