Ann's obituary
Ann Robinson Bury died August 4, 2025 at Givens Estates after 71 years of marriage to Richard (Dick) Bury. Before moving to Asheville in 1986, they lived in Connecticut; California; Arizona; Texas; Montana; Washington D.C; and Nuremberg, Germany. In each of these places they spent many enjoyable hours together dancing, listening to jazz or classical music, hiking, sailing, camping, and white water canoeing.
Ann was born in 1930 in South Orange, New Jersey where she lived until she went to Purdue University. When she was a freshman at Purdue, she met the love of her life and her future husband at a dance class. When he graduated, Ann transferred to the University of Kansas to study Occupational Therapy which was not offered at Purdue. After her graduation in 1953, Ann and Dick were married and took a two-month honeymoon while Dick managed a campground in southern Washington State. Ann easily adapted to rustic living in a cabin with a wood stove for cooking and no electricity. It was that summer that they adopted their first pet, a cat whom they took across the country to Connecticut where Ann would be working as an Occupational Therapist and Dick earned his advanced degrees. Ann and Dick have always had a cat or dog until a few years ago when they began taking in other's pets for short-term care.
Ann sadly leaves behind two daughters and their husbands: Goldie and George Terrell and Margaret (Meg) and Douglas Fraiser. She also leaves three wonderful grandchildren, their spouses, and five great-grandchildren. In her later years, Ann's enjoyment of her children and grandchildren has revolved around playing card games, hiking together, and exchanging many emails.
In California, Ann volunteered for Women for Peace and the Unitarian Church. The Girl Scouts and church occupied much of her spare time in Arizona. In Texas, Ann was very active in the League of Women Voters, serving on both the local board and the state board. She and Dick also worked extensively at the Girl Scout's Camp Howdy. More recently, her volunteering included the Unitarian-Universalist Church, Compassion and Choices, Asheville New Friends, and Givens Estates. Her talent for being exceptionally well organized has been a great asset for these groups. Ann was a good seamstress who loved to garden, but her principal love was dancing with her husband.
