Andrea's obituary
Andrea Susan Green, née Tishler, died at 83, after a life marked by resilience, loyalty, and devotion to her family.
Born and raised in Montreal, Andrea spent much of her adult life in Fresh Meadows, Queens, before later moving to West Hempstead, Long Island. She worked at Verizon for nearly three decades and took pride in working hard and being able to support herself and, when it mattered, the people around her.
She was married to Dock Green Sr., a founding member of the original Drifters. In her younger years, she loved music and dancing and was drawn to the world of doo wop and soul, where she met her husband. After his death from cancer in 1989, Andrea raised her son as a single mother, building her life around him in a way that was steady, constant, and unmistakable.
Andrea was devoted to her family, especially her son, Dock Green Jr., who was at the center of her world and whom she loved deeply. In later years, that same love extended to her granddaughter, Emma, who brought her a great deal of joy and meant everything to her.
She was loyal, sensitive, and deeply committed to her people. She was also feisty, stubborn, and, at times, by her own admission, a real "pain in the butt." She was the kind of person who believed in fighting for what she wanted and did not apologize for it.
She shared an especially close bond with her older sister, Phyllis, who was her best friend and partner in crime for more than seven decades. They went through everything together, including heartbreak, loss, the early death of their mother Hannah, broken relationships, and the long and complicated realities of building lives on their own.
She was also close with her younger sister, Linda, and in later years that bond deepened, with Linda becoming an especially steady presence and source of support as Andrea became more physically limited.
Andrea loved the Knicks and, especially, the Mets. She also carried a lasting love for the Dominican Republic, a place that stayed with her long after she last visited. She was someone people relied on, someone who handled things, and for much of her life, the one behind the wheel.
She is survived by her son, Dock Green Jr.; her granddaughter, Emma Green; her soon-to-be-born granddaughter; her sisters, Phyllis Stevenson and Linda Tishler; her daughter Diana Green; her daughter-in-law, Alka Chaudhary; and her nephew, Christopher Stevenson.
This obituary was written with love by her nephew, Christopher Stevenson.
