Amy's obituary
Amy “Amelia” Genine (Mariani ) Sabol was born on November 5, 1951 in Braddock, PA. to Luella and Eliodoro Mariani.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years John and children John Scott, Jeffrey and wife Stephanie; Jason and wife Amber and children Jaydin and Jase; Justin and wife Excitra and children Roman and Reign; and Jennifer and Fiancé Jimmy and his children Nancy and Aaden; and her mother Luella Simko, and brothers; Phil Mariani, Nick Mariani, and sister Luanne Kelly.
John and Amy met in 1970 at an ATO Fraternity Mixer on the Carnegie-Mellon Campus. They married in May 1973 and embarked on a wonderful and sometimes wild journey that created 5 children over the first 11 years of marriage, while John chased his dream job through 7 moves around the country. They settled in Torrance and that has been her home for the last 37 years.
Amy was the full time mother and spouse, and a full time volunteer focusing on her children’s’ schools and Parishes she attended. She was PTA president at 2 different schools, classroom volunteer, chief fund raiser and on the Site Council
Her greatest accomplishment was getting her husband involved in all her volunteer endeavors.
St. Lawrence became her “Church Family”. She served in many different ways starting when Fr. Mike asked her to lunch shortly after she arrived at St. Lawrence. She volunteered to speak at all the Masses about the new ”Capital Campaign”. This led to Small communities of Faith, Eucharistic Minister to the sick, starting and coordinating the Renew Program, Children’s Liturgy, Senior Lunch Coordinator, Chair Yoga, Cornerstone Women’s Core Team member and a regular attendee at Daily Mass. Amy and John were recognized in 2015 with the “Light of Christ “award.
Amy’s smile and her concern for others is what will be missed the most. Her friend Mary said “Amy was so friendly she never met a stranger”. She loved to cook Italian food and bake special sweet treats at Christmas. And Amy never missed making Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick’s Day.
Among Amy’s qualities she valued family and relationships. Her efforts to stay connected with her children resulted in regular Sunday afternoon dinners. It was time for catching up, sharing a meal & letting everyone know how they were loved by her.
Amy’s mom Luella came to live with her after her children were mostly grown. Amy spent 23 years taking care of her Mom. Just another example of how family was very important to her.
Travel became a big part of Amy & John’s life in the last 20 years. She loved the adventure of visiting new places and had a special call to visit as many churches as she could, no matter where she travelled. Stops included the Holy land, Italy, Ephesus, Greece, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Hungary, Central America, the Panama Canal, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and about 45 of the 50 United States.
Amy & John were a part of the Catholic Engaged encounter community that facilitated pre marriage retreats. She wanted everyone to have the best chance at having a successful Marriage. In the 28 years of facilitating retreats they witnessed to over 5000 couples. Amy & John also held many leadership roles in the National Engaged Encounter community.
Her dedication to Mary and the Divine Mercy was demonstrated every day when Amy would pray the divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00 PM.
She suffered from an autoimmune disease (Myasthenia Gravis) for 8 years and it along with a lung infection led to her death on May 18th at Torrance Memorial.
In lieu of Flowers, Amy would appreciate donations to the Pregnancy Help Center in Torrance.
She is greatly missed by her Family and Friends.
