Amy's obituary
Amy Lavonne (Weseman) Nelson
July 15, 1934 - May 23, 2020
Age 85, passed away in Minneapolis, MN. Amy was born in Austin, MN; daughter of Donald and Roxanna (Warrington) Weseman.
Amy grew up on a family farm in Austin, MN. As the daughter of a teacher, she learned a love of reading and learning, which she continued through her life. She also acquired cooking, sewing, and many other skills on the farm with her busy family. She developed a love of raising animals form her father, Donald, at a young age. Her specialty was raising and showing lambs. She earned many awards in 4H competition, including championship 3 years in a row and a trip to the state fair with her lamb trio; also won honors at the junior livestock show. Amy was also skilled at playing piano and clarinet, playing with her high school band and orchestra. Amy was awarded an academic scholarship to Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated as an RN. She married Delano Nelson on June 18, 1955. She was a key strategic contributor to success of the family drug store in the 1960's and 70's while also working as a nurse. In the late 1970's and 80's she completed a bachelor's degree in fiber design at the University of Minnesota, graduating with honors. Amy developed her early interest in sheep and woll into spinning of wool into yarn, natural and chemical dying of yarn, and then weaving with various fibers. Amy was awarded many ribbons for weavings over the year and even the sweepstakes prize at the state fair. Her rugs and placemats are perfect and durable and used by many of us. Amy also pushed boundaries in gardening with perennials along with Delano. Their beautiful garden was on the Washington County garden tour a number of times. Amy was an active member of the Weavers Guild and DAR for many years. Amy and Del resided in Bloomington for many years, and in Cottage Grove for many more. Because Amy started her boys in ski and piano lessons as early as 1st grade (later trumpet and percussion) and made sure these activities sustained in some form through high school, her sons are lifelong skiers to this day, and enjoy music. She impressed on hers ons the alue of time and of doing constructive things, which they took to heart, practiced, and passed forward. Amy was a loving grandmother, encouraging and reinforcing curiosity, learning, passion, and joy in her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Delano, Sisters Kay (Clyde) Pasvogel, Lana (Carl) Goepfert, brother Douglas (Kay) Weseman, sons Raoul (Patricia) & Eric (Janet); grandchildren Lauren Nelson (David Rogers), Lars (Davina) Nelson, Anders Nelson, Josh (Laura) Caroon & Jamie (Jeff Ebsen); great grandchildren Aaron, Anthony, Katie, and Olivia Caroon, Alexxander and Elizabeth Ebsen and many nieces and nephews. Many thanks to the staff at the Homestead at Anoka for excellent care during the last year and a half. A service will be held at a later date, due to the dreaded Covid-19.
