Ambrose's obituary

Ambrose Gary Simon, 73, of Matthews, N.C. passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte from heart failure. Gary was born on April 14, 1951 to Ambrose Oliver Simon and Martha Jane (Reaser) Simon, and was predeceased by his parents in 1990 and 2001, and two older sisters, Nancy Jane Simon Gruver in 2019 and Joanne Louise Simon Gruver in 2020. Gary grew up in Montgomery, Pa. surrounded by the love of his parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins, while getting into countless adventures with his friends in the “Cabin Gang”. He graduated from Montgomery High School in 1969, and the Electronics Institute of Pennsylvania in 1971. Gary then moved to Elmira, N.Y., where he found work at WETM as a radio engineer, and also met Susan Pulver. They moved to Sue’s hometown of Syracuse, N.Y., married in 1978, and had two children.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Gary worked as a electronic equipment regional sales manager for various firms, before starting his own home repair business in the 2000s. He relocated to the Charlotte area in 2007, and worked as an apartment complex manager and as a merchandising execution associate at the Home Depot. But his greatest happiness came from falling in love with Phyllis Kane, whom he married in 2018.

Gary enjoyed meeting people. He was always eager to strike up conversations with anyone he encountered, particularly while traveling, attending sports games, and hiking with Phyl. He was particularly proud that they hiked down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back in 2021. He was a past board member of Rotary International in Syracuse, N.Y. and a current member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Charlotte, and also participated in volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity. Throughout his life Gary was a car enthusiast and enjoyed spending time on home renovation, and was eager to share his expertise with his children as they both began to renovate their old houses in the 2020s.

Gary is survived by his wife Phyllis Kane of Matthews, N.C., his son Andrew (Janet) Simon of Lexington, Va., his daughter Rebecca (Nathan) Seamon of Richfield Springs, N.Y., and stepchildren, Avery Kane of Charlotte, N.C., Daniel Kane of Matthews, N.C., and Rory Kane of Charlotte, N.C., grandchildren Claire Simon, Timothy Simon, Chester Seamon, Katherine Seamon, and James Seamon, brother Wayne Simon of Williamsport, Pa., brothers-in-law Dennis Gruver and Leslie Gruver of Montgomery, Pa., as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church, 196 Brick Church Road, Montgomery, Pa. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2024 at the church, with Rev. Jim Girven officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to Habitat for Humanity.
