Amanda's obituary

Amanda Alvarez (née Chain)

Amanda Alvarez, aged 91, of Little Ferry, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Amanda's life was a beautiful testament to resilience, love, and devotion. In the 1950s, she embarked on a bold journey, immigrating to the United States and settling in Washington Heights, New York, where she lived for over 50 years before moving to New Jersey.

Amanda was a woman of quiet strength, known for her kindness and unwavering dedication to her family. Alongside her beloved husband, Alfredo, she proudly owned and operated Betty Variety, a discount store in the Bronx, for over five years. Their work ethic and sense of community left an enduring mark on those they served.

Faith was a cornerstone of Amanda's life. As a devoted parishioner of St. Margaret of Cortona Parish in Little Ferry, she found solace and purpose in her faith community.

Amanda’s zest for life was evident in the simple pleasures she enjoyed. Whether she was testing her luck at the slot machines, exploring the world on cruises, or indulging in her love for shopping, Amanda embraced every moment with joy. She had a lifelong love for dancing in her younger years, and she always took pride in looking her best, never leaving the house without her hair done and makeup perfectly applied.

Her greatest joy came from nurturing and caring for her loved ones. Amanda’s kitchen was the heart of her home, where she lovingly prepared meals for family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Whenever her family in the Dominican Republic needed help, she was always there to lend support and provide for them. Her love and care extended far beyond the kitchen, as she was her grandchildren's biggest fan, passionately cheering them on at every sporting event.

Amanda was the beloved wife of Alfredo Alvarez, loving mother of Victor Manuel Santana, Jr., and Beatriz Alvarez and her husband Carl Strunk. She was the cherished grandmother of Betty Santana, Jennifer Santana, Alfredo Santana, Carl B. Strunk, Mateo A. Strunk, and great-grandmother to Soshi, Yuki, Eishi, and Sousuke. She is also predeceased by five brothers and two sisters, now reunited in eternal peace.

Amanda’s legacy is one of warmth, love, and devotion. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 9, 2024, from 4-8 PM at Kimak Funeral Home, 425 Broad Street, Carlstadt. A funeral mass will take place at St. Margaret of Cortona Parish in Little Ferry on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 10:30 AM, departing from the funeral home at 10:00 AM. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to [charity of choice].

May Amanda’s soul rest in peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
