Alvin's obituary
The oldest of three siblings, Alvin was born in Honolulu to Dorothy and Ah Mun Young on October 22, 1942. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, he moved to California to complete his undergraduate degree at Caltech and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Stanford University. It was in the Bay Area that he met his wife (they married on December 20, 1969) and raised their daughter. His career was distinguished by a long tenure at Fairchild, Hewlett-Packard, and Lumileds, where he focused on research related to LEDs.
Though typically soft spoken, Alvin could command the attention of a room with some of his stories. He was well known for his love of fishing, his meticulousness, his dedication to work, his need to arrive at an airport at least 3 hours prior to departure, his expectations for excellent customer service, his dry sense of humor, his inimitable fashion choices, his professed dislike of cheese, and his frugality. In his twilight years, he enjoyed volunteering (teaching people how to write and helping people with their taxes), solving Sudoku puzzles, and watching videos on repeat of his granddaughter (to whom he referred as the “frosting” of his life) when he wasn’t visiting in person.
Alvin is survived by his wife Carol, his daughter Sharon, his granddaughter Vivienne, his brother Michael, and his sister Gwendolyn. As we cannot gather in person to celebrate his memory due to the pandemic, please hold him in your hearts. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
