Alvin's obituary

The Beginning. . .

On Thursday, August 20th 1953 in Albuquerque, NM Alvin James Fultz graced the world with his presence. Soon after his birth, Alvin came home to the loving arms of his mom, dad, brother Vernon and Aunt Lucie. He was called a "good baby," because he did not cry much. He spent his first two months in a small apartment at the Kirkland Air Force Base. While a newborn, Alvin and his family moved more than 1,300 miles in a tiny car from Albuquerque to Montgomery, AL.

Young Alvin. . .

During his formative years from October 1953 to September 1969, Alvin’s family swelled to the delight of 4 more rambunctious boys and 1 girl. In the meanwhile Alvin's quiet demeanor was often mistaken as shyness, but little did people know that he would be a leader amongst men. It was often said, he was the hero and protector of all his brothers: Vernon, Eric, Anthony, Kenneth, Michael and his baby sister Janet, along with a host of cousins who followed his lead as well.

Family Business. . .

So much so, Kenny and Eric followed him by working with him at their father's mechanic shop in Montgomery, where they all learned how to become a craftsman! In the fall of 1969, the Fultz family made another cross country trek, this time north to Detroit, MI, where his sister, Karen was born.

A man meets a woman. . .

Shortly after their move to MI,  Alvin accepted an invitation to a birthday party held at the Northland Skating Rink, where he would meet a cute, light-skinned, firecracker of a woman, Wanda Collins. Moments after meeting this seemingly tall, dark, and handsome, debonair man, Wanda said, "I'm gonna marry that man!" That's what they did, on August 4, 1972.

The Family Expands. . .

Within that union, Wanda gave birth to 3 glorious daughters, Erica, Yvette and Nicole and 1 restless boy Christopher. Early on in their marriage, Alvin chose the career to serve as an Airman in the United States Air Force. In his 20 year tenure, not only did he move his growing family across the country, but across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. But in the fall of 1994, he would cease his worldwide travels and then set his eyes on settling right back where the journey began, Michigan.

The Final Chapter . . .

Over the course of the next 29 years, Alvin's career of service became present in a multitude of forms.  From taking care of clients at Clyde's Carpet all the way to Art Van Furniture from where he retired in 2008.  After which, he  decided to strengthen a relationship by "tinkering" with cars while spending time with his dad at his service station before his death in 2011.  The most fulfilling yet, hardest part of service came when he willingly took on the role as one of the caregivers to his younger brothers Michael (2002) and Eric (2007), his father James (2011), his mother Fannie Mae (2019), and lastly his partner in crime, Floyd Wortham (2022). All preceded him in death.

Alvin was always seen as selfless, giving, patient and kind.  Which was backed his sharp sense of pride, unflinching stubbornness, strength of character, great wisdom as a teacher  and unmatched wit! That peaceful demeanor that he spent a lifetime cultivating, remained with him until his final days.

But what brought Alvin his greatest joy was family.  In 2022, during his 50th wedding anniversary party he said, "We kept the same goal, which was to raise a family and to see it grow."  The expansion of his family made Alvin's eyes sparkle with immense  joy, especially when one of his baby's would take their first step.  At that moment he knew his job was well done, because  he prepared them to walk and then strike out on their own life's journey.

In great fashion the Fultz family kept growing to the tune of 7 grandchildren: Matthew Fultz-Boswell, Dalynn Dunn, Paris Fultz-Boswell, Brandin Dunn, Cameron Dunn, Jamal Fultz & Bentley Fultz.  As well as 6 great-grandchildren: Caleb Piercy, Milan Fultz, Mariah Fultz, Greysen Springer, Mason Fultz & Charliegh Piercy.

Sadly, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 12, 2023, Alvin, "went out the way he lived, quietly," and at home.  In loving memory, his death was preceded by his parents, James and Fannie Mae Fultz and his younger brothers Michael and Eric Fultz.

Throughout his life Alvin would often say to his beautiful bride of 51 years, "You are my everything!"
