Alvernia Benson Life Journey

Alvernia Benson was born on March 10, 1935 in Tignall, Georgia (Wilkes County). Alvernia was the tenth born out of eleven children to Jack and Susie (Pullen) Benson.

Alvernia gave her life to Christ at an early age. She attended Pole Branch Baptist Church in Tignail, GA, as a youth. This foundation of faith guided her through her life and made her humble women of God. Upon her arrival to Cleveland. She joined Peace Baptist Church where she was a member for many years and later joined Harvest Baptist Church where she was a faithful member until she could no longer attend. Alvernia loved the Lord and loved attending church.

Alvernia graduated from Wilkes County Schools. She was the last sibling to leave Tignail, GA to relocate in Cleveland OH, where she lived with her brother, RD. She performed domestic work for many years. She was then employed by Graphic Laminators located in Cleveland, OH in 1968, then moved with the company when they relocated to Solon, OH and work there until she retired in 1997.

Alvernia known as “Verna” loved to plant gardens. She was part of the Cleveland Garden Project on Lee Road. She and fellow residents planted, tended, and shared the harvest with everyone. She loved to play cards, checkers and put large puzzles together. She was known for her sharp suites and her bad church hats. She loved to shop. One of her favorite sayings was “I’m just middling”.

Alvernia was a dessert lover, her favorite was Bread Pudding. Vernia was that favorite Aunt that everyone wished for. She loved spending time with grandkids and her entire family and was known as the life of the party.
Alvernia greatest gift from God was her only son, Gregory Len Benson (“Greegree”) her daughter-in-law Candace (“I got a daughter now”) and her three grandchildren, Noah Gregory (“my big boy”), Nehemiah Gregory (“my Nehema”) and Naomi Grace (“my beautiful granddaughter Grace”). She loved her grand babies they filled her life with great joy.

Alvernia had five brothers and four sisters who preceded her in death: James (Ethel Ree), Robert (Effie), Grover (Amanda), Wess (Geraldine), Lois (James Wilkerson, Sr.), Azilee (Jesse Booker), Clinton (Essie Lou), Gracie (James Tyson) and Betty (Bruce Parham) and one Brother-in-Law Marion Willis.

She leaves to mourn in her passing her one sister: Estelle Willis of Detroit, MI. Her son Gregory (Candace) and three grandchildren; Noah, Nehemiah, and Naomi. Her Nieces and Nephews: Peggie (Eddie Thomas), Yvonne Booker. Alexa (William Henderson), Alfred (Annette)Benson, Millinese (Samuel Fortson). Cindy (Andre Jackson), Larry, Terry and Jerri Benson, Mable Jean. Reginald Wilkerson, James (Shirlene), Susan (Jerry Morgan), Leo (Gloria), Brian (Helen) Wilkerson. Athetha (George Ditzhazy), Terrryton and Clinton Benson Jr. Vivian Tansil, Monica Yvette Griggs, Marion Douglas Jr, Leslie Kirby and Dedria Willis. Pamela Tyson Crenshaw, Sonja, Curtis (Sharon) Parham and Linda Booker. A host of great nieces, nephews and her great nephew/second son Jeffrey Smith. Best Friend Lola Thurmond and many other friends and family she cherished dearly.
