Aloy's obituary
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Aloy "Little nose" Hamster Schmertz, more fondly known as Little nose, but preferred Aloy. Born in the year 2022, Aloy passed away on November 21, 2023. She will be remembered for her gentle, patient, smart, and persistent spirit, a combination of fierceness and sweetness that defined her personality.
Aloy was a rescue hamster who was adopted by her fur mommy in September 2022. She immediately showed her fierce nature by attempting to assert herself as the alpha female in the apartment. Her first few weeks in her new home were punctuated by mini-confrontations between her and her fur mommy, with the outcome often in doubt. Aloy let it be known that she did not like to be told what to do, especially when it came to shredding carpet. Many times her fur mommy barely escaped getting her feet bitten when Aloy became incensed at interference with her carpet shredding activities. But she never actually bit anyone, and Aloy and her fur mommy got along famously once Aloy adjusted to her new home.
Unfortunately, Aloy had dilated cardiomyopathy, which is common among hamsters. Aloy was diagnosed at a young age and faithfully took heart medications via syringe for almost 11 months. She eventually developed other conditions that took her life, but she was always sweet and cooperative with everyone at her vet's office.
Aloy had an independent and opinionated nature. She was also trusting, loving, resourceful, loyal, stubborn, curious, resilient, sweet, and kind. A remarkable creature, Aloy was not only a source of amusement through her antics but also an inspiring figure who taught others how to be both fierce and sweet. For a hamster, she had much verve and elan. If she disagreed with something, she made it known. Her temper tantrums could be epic, with toy banging and gnawing on her cage. But she also made habits of patiently waiting for her fur mommy to arrive home after work and quietly emerging from her burrow when she sensed her fur mommy puttering around the apartment.
Aloy had a penchant for spinach and Cheerios, her favorite foods. Her liking for Mozart, the timeless composer, spoke volumes about her refined tastes. Mozart's Requiem in particular seemed to soothe her--upon hearing it, she would pause and stand alertly with her ears wide open. Some of her favorite ways to exercise included dashing across the apartment, displaying speed and energy that would leave onlookers in awe.
Aloy's adventurous spirit shone through her favorite games, which included shredding boxes and carpets and hiding under the couch to avoid being put back in her cage. She had the uncanny ability to outsmart many attempts at hamster-proofing, proving herself to be incredibly resourceful. She also proved to be a little Houdini, quickly unlatching the door and escaping from her playpen the first time she was in it.
Some of her most astonishing feats included climbing a screen door from the floor to the ceiling and being a prodigious carpet shredder. Each accomplishment was a testament to her determined and relentless spirit. She never backed down from a challenge, even when her fur mommy would have preferred her to do so.
With Aloy's passing, we reflect on a legacy of dignified suffering, fierce determination, and enormous sweetness and gentleness. Her life, though short, was filled with experiences and lessons that reflect her big personality. Aloy will be missed deeply by her fur mommy, everyone at her longtime vet's office, and all who knew about her antics and her travails.
