Alma's obituary

Alma Starr (Turner) was born in Haskell, Oklahoma, to Warren A. and Myrtle M. Turner. Her family lived in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, before moving to Avenal, California, during the Great Depression/Dust Bowl era. Alma was the youngest of 5 children. In her early adult life, during World War II, she worked various jobs to support the war effort, including making radio tubes for a time. In 1944, she met Art Starr, (also formerly from Oklahoma) in Modesto, California, at a dance, while he was on leave from the U.S. Army. After the war, they married and made their home across the street from Alma's parents, in Avenal. Art worked at that time for the Standard Oil Company. Alma was a homemaker. While in Avenal, they had three children, Michael in 1945, Chris in 1946, and Deborah in 1953. In 1957, Art and Alma moved to Oildale, a suburb of Bakersfield, California, where Art got a better job, and bought a bigger home. In 1964, Jeffrey came along. In 1982, the family moved to Cottonwood, Arizona, to be closer to family. Sadly, Art passed away two months later. In 1989, at age 62, Alma took classes at Yavapai College to earn her Arizona Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license, so she could better work to support herself and her family and to help others in her community. Everyone who knew Alma, knew she was special. She was dedicated to her children and grandchildren, and she always had a special heart for those elderly she nursed and cared for in Sedona, and for the residents at Cottonwood Village. In later years, Alma continued to take care of the family home, and support her children and grandchildren. Alma was a believer in Jesus Christ and the Christian faith. She will be forever missed, and always in our hearts, until we meet again in Heaven.
Alma is survived by her sister, Clara Mae Lomax of Hobbs, NM, son, Jeffrey, of Kingman, AZ, and grandson, Toby, of Cottonwood, along with several grandchildren. There will be no funeral arrangements at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, to be announced. Friends and family of Alma may post memories of Alma and comments for the family, in a book of remembrance through the website at Buehler Funeral Home, in Cottonwood.
