Alma Starr (Turner) was born in Haskell, Oklahoma, to Warren A. and Myrtle M. Turner. Her family lived in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, before moving to Avenal, California, during the Great Depression/Dust Bowl era. Alma was the youngest of 5 children. In her early adult life, during World War II, she worked various jobs to support the war effort, including making radio tubes for a time.
