Alison's obituary
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing on Monday, November 13th 2023, of Alison Green Braverman at age 87. She passed away in her sleep after many years of dementia. She was the beloved wife of 66 years to Phil, mother of Katie, Jeff, and Jessica (Joel), and grandmother to Amalia and Sarah. Alison leaves behind many close friends and family, including her sister, Vicki Green (Bob Curry), sister-in-law, Marilyn Branston, nephew, Scott, and nieces, Jill, Nan and Eve.
Alison (Allie) was born in San Francisco on January 21, 1936 to Seymour and Sallie Green. Allie met her husband, soulmate, and best friend, Phil Braverman at age 17 at Lowell High School in San Francisco. They attended SF City College together. She went on to get a degree from SF State. They married in 1957 and settled in Berkeley. Allie taught school while Phil was in grad school at UC Berkeley. Their daughter, Jessica, was born in 1961, followed by Jeff in 1964, and Katie in 1966. In 1967, Allie and Phil moved to Oakland to raise the kids.
Allie was an amazing mother to all; the house was regularly filled with neighborhood kids. You were always fed at the Braverman house, whether it was popsicles by the pool, cornflake chicken for dinner, or chocolate chip waffles if you slept overnight. Allie was deeply involved in her kids’ lives in big and small ways. This closeness continued throughout their lives.
In 1986, as empty nesters, Allie and Phil moved to Alameda, then Napa, before settling in Folsom in 2001 to be close to their twin granddaughters. Allie was a devoted and fun grandma, keeping special toys at the house, hosting sleepovers, and spending years on carpool duty; she always brought their favorite snacks. Living only 15 minutes away allowed for frequent attendance at recitals, drama performances, and numerous other events.
Alison had many careers: teacher, school librarian, antique dealer, and 17 years with CSAA as a Computer Programmer and Data Analyst. She finished her career at Phil Braverman Associates wearing many hats.
Never one to sit still, Allie was an active volunteer. She volunteered with the Alta Bates Cancer Center. She was involved in every synagogue they joined, the most recent being Temple Or Rishon in Orangevale. Allie was Social Action Chair, involved with Sisterhood, and organized the book club. With a lifelong interest in anthropology and Native cultures, she volunteered as a docent at the California State Indian Museum, giving tours to school and scout groups.
She attended water aerobics for more than two decades and played ukulele weekly with Phil. She was an avid snorkeler; Maui was a particular favorite. Allie loved to travel. A highlight was living in England for two years when the kids were little because Phil was on assignment there for IBM. Allie and Phil returned to England numerous times to visit and explore. Her final trip was to Israel in 2018 for the 70th Anniversary. Allie loved and supported Israel, visiting seven times to tour and volunteer. For more than 30 years she wore a necklace with the Hebrew letter “Shin” in the shape of a dove. She vowed to wear it until peace occurred in the Middle East; sadly a dream that did not come true.
Throughout her life she was interested in current affairs and was politically active. She especially liked supporting women running for office. Allie was vibrant, intelligent, friendly, and warm; she made friends wherever she went. Allie could talk for hours with friends, family, shopkeepers, or even a stranger in line at the grocery store, sometimes to the chagrin of Phil or her children.
She will be deeply missed. May her memory be for a blessing. Z”L.
Memorial Service and lunch will take place at 11:00am on Sunday, November 26th, 2023, at Temple Or Rishon, 7755 Hazel Ave, Orangevale, CA .
