Alice's obituary

Alice M. O’Reilly left this earthly realm on Sunday, May 31, 2020, after a battle with cancer. She was wrapped in the arms of her loving family. It would be wrong to say that Alice lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always optimistic and determined. When anyone else would have broken, Alice stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly looks like. There was no quit in Alice. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight. Alice was the devoted and loving mother to Charlene (Norman), Susan (Brian), Patricia (Robert), Alice (Louis), Theresa (Edward), Hugh (Tennille), Francis, and the late Baby Charles. Alice is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was a former parishioner at Saint Anne Parish in Philadelphia where she was born and raised, instilling in her a devout faith in God and her parish. She attended Mercy Vocational Technical High School, and her first job was at Stetson’s where they made cowboy hats. She worked really hard loading and unloading trucks at Simkar Lighting. Her talent and most loved job was as a Certified Nursing Assistant where she cared for the elderly residents in the Florida and Philadelphia areas. She really enjoyed cooking and having Sunday dinners with her family - there was a plate for anyone who walked through the door. Even if there wasn’t a chair, she always had a sheet on the floor for you to sit on. She loved to listen and dance to the “oldies.” Her most favorite dances were, “Mickey’s Monkey, and the Jitterbug.” Alice also enjoyed watching late night TV shows while eating ice cream. She liked to have little “pow wows” and her favorite saying was “Can I make a suggestion.” Some of Alice’s fondest memories were traveling with her siblings and cousins and enjoying family sleep overs. She loved playing pinochle, having late night talks with her grandchildren, and enjoyed pranking them during the holidays. When Alice was with her grandchildren, she would teach them how to play 500 rummy and always shared some of her life stories when she was their age. Alice always looked forward to watching the Mummers Show of Shows just as she did with her own mom as a young child. To know her was to understand the meaning of selflessness. She will be forever missed by those whose lives she truly touched. Her viewing will be on Monday, June 8, 2020 beginning at 9:00 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM at St. Anne Parish, 2328 E. Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125. Internment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in Alice’s honor to St. Anne Parish, 2328 E. Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125. Please be aware that strict CDC guidelines will be observed. Face masks for guests will be required along with social distancing. Thank you for your cooperation. Funeral Arrangements by Edward Hugh McBride Funeral Home, 2321 E. Huntingdon Street, Philadelphia, PA 19125.
