Alfred's obituary

Alfred Perley Parent passed away peacefully on August 29th, 2024, at his home in Hermon. Born on July 7th, 1939, in Brewer to the late Laura Tracy and Perley Parent, Alfred was a man who lived life his way—strong, stubborn, and with a sense of humor that would catch you off guard just when you needed it most. Famously known for surviving a load of lumber being dropped on him, he would often joke that he was “too stubborn to take down,” and time and time again, he proved it.

Alfred's introduction to hard work came early in life, starting in the family mill, where he cultivated a work ethic that would make most people pale in comparison. He proudly served his country in the National Guard, and when he wasn’t busy in uniform, he was working with his hands as a carpenter. With sawdust practically running through his veins and a tape measure that seemed to be an extension of his hand, Alfred could build just about anything. His customers didn’t just walk away with a well-built roof or a sturdy deck; they walked away with a lifelong friend who they knew would always have their back.

Alfred had a unique talent for making those around him feel special, whether it was through a kind word, a perfectly timed joke, or simply showing up when it mattered most. He was, as people often say, truly one of a kind—a character who could charm just about anyone, even a load of lumber.

He is survived by his daughter, Krystel Parent of Hermon, Maine, who inherited his stubbornness and fierce loyalty; his step-sons, James Inman of Massachusetts, who Alfred always admired. Richard Inman and his wife Becky of Hermon, who always admired his tenacity; Steven Inman of Milford, who shares Alfred’s love of old clocks; and Patrick Inman and his wife Norma of Hermon, who carry forward Alfred’s DIY spirit in every project they take on. He was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Linda Inman of Bangor.

Alfred was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, sharing a particularly close bond with his granddaughter Heather Parsons and her husband Adam of Bangor, with whom he loved to discuss politics. His granddaughter Stephanie Sacobie of Hermon can attest to the fact that he always had a story ready—whether you wanted to hear it or not!

As the oldest in a large family, Alfred leaves behind siblings who fully understand the responsibility that comes with being the eldest. He is survived by James Parent, and wife Linda, Frances Parent and wife Elsie, James (Patricia) Kelley, Pamela (Dave) McPheeters, Sharon Corbin, Sister in-law Katherine Poisson, Patrick Poisson, and Paul Poisson, Perley Parent Jr, Michele Richens, Marlene Booker, and Susan Macdonald who will miss his brotherly advice—often. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings: Theresa Michaud, Robert Kelley, Michael Poisson, and Patricia Michaud, Delores Graves, who are undoubtedly welcoming him with open arms on the other side. As well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Alfred will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was fiercely loved, and he loved fiercely in return. True to his nature, Alfred always said he didn’t want a fuss when he was gone, so there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, the family will hold a celebration of life at a later date—a gathering that will likely be filled with jokes, stories, and a toast to the man who could build anything and always leave you with a smile.
