Alfred's obituary

Alfred F. DiMente Jr, 92, went to be with the Lord, on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2023 at 4:30 pm at his home in North Hollywood, CA.

Born on November 21st, 1930, in Rhode Island, he was the son of Dr. Alfred DiMente, born in Rome, Italy, and Theresa (Napolitano), born in Rhode Island. He was one of 10 children - eight sisters & one brother, all whom have passed, except for one remaining sister, Antoinette “Honey” Carbone of Warwick, RI. He was preceded in death by Anne Signore, Stella McLaughlin, Rose A. Cesino, Anthony DiMente, Claire Shippee, Pauline Ursillo, Theresa “Tessie” Cochran, and Marion Manni.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 66 years, Helen, two sons, Alfred III (Skip), and his wife, Lynn, son Michael, granddaughters Carissa and her boyfriend Chris, and Theresa Cohn and her husband Mike, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Alfred met Helen in Rhode Island and soon they were wed & off to California to start their lives together and he wanted to pursue his dream of being an actor. Alfred was able to live out that dream, and performed on many shows where he had the opportunity to play various acting parts through the years. As an actor, he was also known as ‘Alan Craig’ and enjoyed notable roles on Hogan’s Heroes, Star Trek, and as The Gunner on McHale’s Navy. In addition to his television roles, he also appeared in the feature films 'Spartacus' with Kirk Douglas, and 'That Touch of Mink' with Doris Day, as well as many others.  He also worked on 'Some Like It Hot' with Marylin Monroe and made a bet with some of his friends on set that he could get the iconic Monroe to kiss him.  They took the bet, he went up to Miss Monroe and said something to her and she gave him a big hug and a kiss.  He walked back to his friends to get his money, and they asked him, what did you say to her?  He said I can't believe men actually get paid to kiss you.  She replied, "how sweet" and gave him a big hug and kiss.  He was also fortunate to get her autograph.

He was very active in both the Screen Actor's Guild as well as the Screen Extra's Guild and was a fighting force during his tenure as the Vice President of the Screen Extra's Guild.  He fought hard for the members.

He was also a member of Parimutuel Union Local 280 and was very active on the Board of Directors and always looked out for the best interest of the Union Members.

In addition to his various acting roles and Union memberships, he was also in the Marines during the Korean War, and narrowly missed out on being part of the action, as the war ended just two weeks before he was set to be deployed.

Al’s Catholic faith was a central part of his life.  He was very involved in the church and served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.  He will be forever loved and missed.

We will always carry your memory in our hearts.

Services will be March 14th, 2023 at 2:00pm at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA 92518

I am leaving you with a gift - peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

(John 14:27)

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, On earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory Forever & Ever.  Amen.

(Matthew 6:9-13)
