Alex's obituary

Alexander Tartera Raul

Alexander Tartera Raul passed away during the descent from the summit of Aconcagua Mountain near La Cueva in Mendoza, Argentina on December 30, 2023.

Born in Silver Spring on October 10, 1993, he was the son of Carmen Tartera and Robin Raul. Alex is survived by his brother Julian Raul, his sister Nuria Raul and his partner Katherine Powers. He is also survived by Katherine and Alex’s beloved rescue dog, Cora.

Alex was raised in Silver Spring, MD and attended Blake High School. He graduated with distinction from the University of Maryland in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. Following graduation, Alex founded Rackner Solutions with Frank Hackenburg and DJ Gagner. The company is a cloud-native consultancy which enables digital transformation for large organizations through the newest in distributed technology. As the Chief Executive Officer, Alex worked tirelessly and was always thinking of new and novel ways to grow the business. He became proficient in the subject of Kubernetes and subsequently published a book: “Cloud Native with Kubernetes”. Alex was immensely proud when Inc. Magazine named their company one of the top 5000 fastest growing companies in the summer of 2023.

In recent years, Alex strove for self-improvement and loved setting goals and achieving new challenges. He was fluent in two languages and would often learn enough of a new language prior to a trip to ensure he could speak with locals and order a meal at a restaurant. Alex loved food; he enjoyed cooking for family and friends, researching and making reservations at new restaurants and was always willing to try new cuisines. Alex was first introduced to travel at age 3months and cherished his summers in Barcelona and spending time with family there and in India. He recently enjoyed trips to Egypt, Hawaii, Portugal, Scotland, Kenya and Australia. He visited every continent except Antarctica. Alex played several musical instruments, including the acoustic guitar, electric guitar and keyboard and he loved jazz. In last few years, he became scuba certified and he received his boating license. He and his family joined the Annapolis boating club and he thoroughly enjoyed boating in the Annapolis Harbor, in Florida, and other vacation destinations. In 2018, he set his sights on training for a marathon and proceeded to run and complete three marathons. He trained further and in 2021, he completed an Ironman in Tulsa, OK. And just days prior to departing for Argentina, Alex completed all studies and flight training and was awarded his private pilot license. The day before leaving he and Katherine closed on their dream condo in DC. They were looking forward to planning their wedding in Barcelona and growing their family in their new home.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Friends Meeting of Washington, 2111 Decatur Place NW, Washington, DC 20008 on Saturday January 27, 2024, from 3 – 6 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue of Arlington, VA, the organization that placed Cora with Alex and Katherine. Also, a memorial mass will be celebrated at St Agnes Church, Niantic, CT on August 4, at 11am with a reception to follow at 4 Round Rock Rd, Niantic.

While we can never understand why a life as vibrant and promising as Alex’s would be lost so young, we take some comfort in knowing that he had achieved his goal of reaching the summit of Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia and was surrounded by some of nature’s most beautiful scenery. We will always love and miss you, rest in peace Alex.
