Alex's obituary

Alex Hewitt, beloved friend, passed away on the morning of November 14, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. He was 44 years old, and will be missed dearly.

Spending time with Alex made you feel the same way watching The Goonies makes you feel. Nostalgic, warm and fuzzy, and overall a great adventure.

Known for being charismatic and up for anything, Alex was not a legend in his own mind, but most certainly a legend in the minds and hearts of his friends.

He was one of one. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him will tell you that.

He had the most infectious laugh, and an extremely kind heart. We, his friends, are only just now learning of some of the many, many kind things he did for others.

Alex loved the arts, movies, and especially music. In high school, he moved up to West Chester, PA, from Atlanta, GA, and taught us all about OutKast and Goodie Mob. We are forever grateful and remain huge fans. Alex shared many legendary nights dancing to music with friends, and left us with so many memories associated with so many fun songs. For instance, he loved the song “I Can’t Wait” by Nu Shooz, and you can’t help but smile remembering how he would sing the chorus in his signature falsetto. For this reason, he was the best road trip partner.

Alex also enjoyed science fiction films, books, and art such as Aliens, Ghost in the Shell, and anything from Kurt Vonnegut or H.R. Giger. He himself was a talented writer and artist. He was also a huge fan of Bjork, and created many works of art inspired by her.

Another one of his passions was old cars- working on them and talking about them with his best friend, the best friend anyone could ever ask for, Tom Finnerty.

Tom and Alex shared an epic friendship that should go down in history and be talked about for centuries. We should all be so lucky to have that kind of love in our lives. Thank you, Tom, for taking care of and watching over Alex right up until the very end. We are forever grateful.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. It is currently being planned, and will be announced soon.

Donations can be made in Alex's name to Play On Philly, an organization that provides music education to underserved children in Philadelphia.  More information on this can be found on the "Give" tab at the top of this page.

Alex, we pray you are at peace now. You showed us the power of community, laughter, and how therapeutic it is to be there for one another, in good times and in bad.

We give thanks for your life, and for the myriad of experiences we were so blessed to share with you. We continue to wish your spirit well now that our time together is over. You are immensely loved.

In closing during this difficult time, dear reader and mourner, please take with you this quote from Charlotte the Spider, from the book Charlotte’s Web:

“You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die. A spider’s life can’t help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. But by helping you, Wilbur, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a bit. Heaven knows anyone’s life could use a little of that.”

Please take a moment today, in Alex’s honor, to remember that a life is only worth living if we do our best for those around us. And, perhaps more importantly, that once we have shared love with someone, that love will never be forgotten.
