Alejandro's obituary
Alejandro “Alex” Antonio Soda, 85 years old of Charleston, SC passed away the morning of February 8, 2022.
Although he survived the first two years of the global COVID-19 pandemic, sadly he succumbed to the coronavirus disease when he was struck, and lost his struggle with the Omicron variant.
He was a widower and is survived by his two daughters, Christina Soda and Andrea Patterson, his grandson Christopher, nephews, nieces and dear friends.
Born June 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alejandro was the son of Italian immigrants to Argentina where he lived the first thirty years of his life. He moved to the United States in the 1960s with his wife, Marta and infant daughter.
Alex dedicated his life to science and was a analytical chemist having worked for General Motors, Verona Corp, Mobay Chemical Corp, Miles Inc. – the latter three, all divisions of Bayer.
He received many accolades and promotions during his career and even patented a chemical process for Bayer AG, Germany.
Alex was an avid listener of music, enjoying many genres and passing on his knowledge and great love of music down to his children. He thought it was important to surround oneself with music, not only for enjoyment but also relaxation, and firmly believe in its healing benefits. He was a patron of the arts and enjoyed attending symphonies, operas, ballets and concerts.
He was an avid sports fan, enjoying football, boxing, tennis and his great love – soccer. He was so proud of having been interviewed by a local tv station in Charleston back in 1978 when his beloved Argentina won the World Cup.
Alex was a gardener and especially loved his vegetable gardens. He enjoyed taking his family on memorable summer vacations.
He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.
His favorite charity organizations included tge National Kidney Foundation, National Public Radio, and the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Charleston.
