Alberto's obituary
Alberto was born on February 24, 1953 in Havana, Cuba. He received his BS from University of Florida and a medical degree from Universidad Central del Este, in the Dominican Republic. He trained in General Surgery at the Union Memorial Hospital in Maryland and at the Phoenix Heart Institute in Arizona. He then did a fellowship in vascular surgery at Yale University Hospital in Connecticut. He practiced general and vascular surgery for 35 years at Mercy and Coral Gables Hospital in Miami, Florida. On December 14th, 1997, he married his devoted and adoring wife, Erika de Marchena. They lived in Key Biscayne, where they raised their wonderful children.
Alberto had a passion for the practice of Medicine and the wellbeing of his patients. In his private life he loved the ocean, boating, and the study of history and nature. He enjoyed nothing more than spending weekends on the boat with his family, frequently visiting Elliot Key and Pennekamp.
Alberto was preceded in death by his loving parents, Octavio and Mercedes. He is survived by his wife Erika, his four loving children, Jacqueline Powell and Venessa Diaz (of Myra, his first wife), Michelle and Albert; his grandchildren Jean Carlos, Nathaniel, Raul, Elizabeth, and Nathalie; his siblings Octavio, Eduardo, George and Diana and multiple nieces, and nephews.
A service will be held at Coral Gables United Church of Christ at 1:00 on Saturday, January 29, 2022, located at 3010 De Soto Blvd. Coral Gables, FL 33134. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation to Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on his behalf.
