Albert's obituary

Albert (Al) Stanonik, 75, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away on January 16, 2024.

Al was born on March 17, 1948, to Albert and Irene Stanonik in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from West Geauga High School in 1966, he went on to serve in the Marine Corps, where he was in the Presidential Guard and guarded the President's home in California while stationed at Camp Pendleton.

After serving in the Marines, he enrolled at Tri-C Cuyahoga Community College, where he studied for several semesters. Later, he began his 30+ year career at Norfolk Southern Railroad as a Bridge & Building Carpenter, building and maintaining critical railroad infrastructure.

In the late 1970s, Al met his wife Tammy, and they would go on to have two children, Joseph and Tiffany. In 1987, they moved from their long-time residence in Cleveland, Ohio to raise their family in the small lake town of Conneaut, Ohio. Al was a truly exceptional and devoted father. He faced the profound challenge of single-handedly raising his children for over a decade after the tragic loss of his wife. Al’s dedication to their well-being extended beyond mere words, as he stood by them through every accomplishment and adversity in their lives. He always showed unwavering support to his children and provided important life lessons emphasizing empathy, resilience, strength, and endurance. Al felt his most significant achievement in life was raising his children to be strong, independent, successful adults. He had great pride as he witnessed the achievements of his children and, later, of his grandchildren.

Al's reputation was built on the foundation of his exceptionally compassionate heart, particularly evident in his kindness and acceptance towards friends, family, and beloved pets. In retirement, Al was an avid reader with a particular fondness for historiography. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching Cleveland sports, working outside, and spending time with his dogs.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Irene Stanonik, brother Roy Pottschmidt, wife Tammy (Weisenseel) Stanonik, and son Albert Stanonik (III). He is survived by his brother Frank Stanonik, sister Alice (Stanonik) Gosztyla, children Joseph Stanonik and Tiffany (Evan) Cribbs, his granddaughters Zoe and Eva Cribbs, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours for a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to Ashtabula Animal Protective League, 5970 Green Road Ashtabula, Ohio 44004, or www.ACAPL.org.
