Bert's obituary
Albert Arnold Abercrombie (Bert), first born of Albert Sr. and Genevieve Abercrombie, was born on January 8, 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee. In his younger years, he lived in Rochester, New York, recalling many times the memory of seeing the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall with his mom. As an adult, Bert lived in California and then later, in Idaho.
Throughout his life, Bert demonstrated a love of God, family and serving others. Bert involved himself in church events, including participating in a missions trip to China to deliver bibles, starting a group bible study (SAIL- Single Adults In the Lord), and various services within the church. Bert remained in contact with his siblings throughout his life. He sought enduring relationships with others. Due to the brokenness of others and his own brokenness, some relationships did not last. Still, he remained steadfast in his desire for connection. Bert welcomed into his home four natural born children and two step-children whom he called his own. His face always lit up when in the presence of children. He loved being a grandfather. Bert devoted his life to educating children and young adults, specifically focusing on math and music. Later in his career, Bert returned to school for his special education credential. In this capacity, Bert worked with adults at Atascadero State Hospital and children with special needs in the public school system. Upon retirement, Bert tried to settle down but found himself longing for interaction with people once again. He took on a service position at Lowe’s and, later, Home Depot, enjoying interacting with customers and co-workers with humor and attentiveness. Outside of work, Bert generously looked after the needs of others with kindness and love. Although devoted to work and home, Bert had a sense of adventure and creativity. He got his pilot’s license and flew small aircraft for a time. He trained and worked as a deputy sheriff for San Bernardino County. He worked in his shop, completing practical and creative wood projects. And, at the age of 83, Bert traveled to Israel with his daughter to fulfill a lifelong dream of seeing the places Jesus walked.
On May 11, 2023, Bert was diagnosed with double pneumonia and Stage 4 Large, Diffuse B-cell Lymphoma. He went through one round of chemotherapy before deciding to trust Jesus with the remainder of his life. Home with his family, Bert graciously allowed others to care for him, maintaining his sense of humor and smile through it all.
On Saturday, August 19 at 5:10 PM, at the age of 84, Bert exhaled his last breath on earth and inhaled in the presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ. No longer weak or in pain, he is at peace.
Bert is survived by his wife, three siblings, six children and his ten grandchildren.
A good man.
