Al's obituary
Alfred "Big Al" Landers, a beloved community figure and cherished father, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2024, at the age of 68, after facing complications from an illness. Born on August 4, 1956, in Hackensack, NJ, Al was the beloved son of the late Alfred Edward Galli Sr. and Joan Knapp.
In 1963, Al's life took a transformative turn when his family relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It was there that he was lovingly embraced and raised by Jack Landers, who became a guiding influence and cherished father figure in Al’s life.
Al was a proud graduate of Northeast High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and later attended Florida State University. He lived a life full of passion and enthusiasm, embracing diverse interests and excelling in many endeavors. A true aficionado, Al had a profound love for wine, sharing his knowledge and enjoyment with family and friends, often through gatherings and wine groups. In his younger years, he was an accomplished triathlete, pushing his physical limits and competing in events across Marco Island and Naples. His athleticism extended to tennis, where he played in various leagues, and baseball, where his competitive spirit was always evident.
A music lover at heart, Al not only enjoyed listening to his favorite bands but also collected memorabilia that reflected his lifelong dedication to the music scene. His passion for motorcycles provided him with a sense of freedom and adventure, and he cherished the time spent on the open road.
Al was a devoted father to his children, Tiana Gatto Landers and Reno Gatto Landers. Tiana, engaged to Jesus (Chuy) Barnhart, resides in Lehigh Acres, Florida. Reno shares his life with his partner, Luisana Linhares, in Cumming, Georgia. Al’s greatest joys were his beloved grandchildren: Aubriella Aviana Barnhart, 10; Axel Steele Barnhart, 3; and Maximus Leonidas Landers, 19 months.
He is survived by his siblings: Drue Landers (Len Murray) of Sarasota, Florida; Jack Landers (Lisa Spees) of Santee, California; and Chris Landers (Rae Smith) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Al is predeceased by his parents, Joan Knapp and Jack Landers, as well as his sister, Janet Landers. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, love, and generosity.
In 1987, Al married Robin Marie Gatto of Sutton, Massachusetts. Although their marriage ended after twenty-one years, they remained close friends, nurturing a beautiful relationship built on respect and shared memories.
Al and Robin were integral to the Marco Island community, owning and operating several popular eateries since their arrival in 1985. Their establishments, including Big Al’s Hoagie House and Sports Pub, Kahuna’s Hamburger Restaurant, Buckwheat’s Barbecue, Bimini’s Beach Club (in partnership with the late Jim Reinders), Cocomo’s Grill, and the resurrected Big Al’s Deli—now run by his niece, Candice Simmons, and Jackie Romanowicz—became iconic landmarks on the island. Al was not just a restaurateur but a mentor, generously sharing his expertise with fellow restaurant owners and helping to foster a vibrant culinary community.
Al’s kindness and generosity were legendary. He was a pillar of the Marco Island community, known not only for his business success but for his unwavering commitment to helping others. Whether it was offering a warm meal, a helping hand, or support to those in need, Al’s heart was always open. His dedication to charitable causes and local organizations left an indelible mark on the community, and his spirit of compassion and selflessness will be remembered by all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Big Al. Your generous spirit, love for life, and boundless kindness will forever be cherished. Marco Island has lost one of its true legends, but your legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know you.
A private interment will be held at the request of his children, Tiana and Reno. In lieu of flowers, donations and messages of condolence can be made in Al’s name to Everloved.com.
