Obituary: His Majesty King Adedapo Aderemi, Alayemore of the Ido-Osun Kingdom
It is with profound sadness and respect that we announce the passing of His Majesty Oba King Adedapo Adeen Aderemi, the 46th reigning Alayemore of the Ido-Osun Kingdom. His Majesty's reign since ascending the throne of his ancestors in 2005 has been characterized by wisdom, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of his people and the larger African continent.
Born into the storied lineage of Ido-Osun, King Adedapo Aderemi spent 25 years in New York, where he honed his skills and expertise as an architect and urban planner. His illustrious career in the United States included the design and property management of landmark buildings in Manhattan, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication to his craft.
Upon his return to Ido-Osun, King Aderemi embarked on a journey of transformative leadership, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a progressive vision for his kingdom. His Majesty was a passionate advocate for women's empowerment, establishing the "Palace as a Safe Haven" initiative, which provided refuge and support for women and girls. He was deeply committed to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Agenda 3 (good health and well-being) and Agenda 5 (gender equality), striving to see these goals realized by 2030 across Africa.
A survivor and vocal critic of early child marriage, King Aderemi dedicated his life to combating harmful practices and advocating for the rights and dignity of women and girls. His leadership extended beyond the borders of his kingdom, as he played a pivotal role in shaping the Coalition of Traditional Leaders of Africa (COTLA) and the Council of Traditional Leaders of Africa (CONATA). These platforms enabled traditional, cultural, and religious leaders to engage constructively with the African Union, the United Nations, and other regional, national, and local bodies to promote human rights and sustainable development.
His Majesty was also a trustee of the African Views Organization's Elders Council, based in New York, further cementing his legacy as a bridge between cultures and continents and a staunch defender of progressive cultural values and human rights.
King Adedapo Aderemi, affectionately known as Daddy King in Suriname, leaves behind his devoted wives and nine children, who will carry on his legacy of kindness, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the betterment of society. The people of Ido-Osun and all those whose lives he touched through his leadership and vision are very saddened by his passing.
