Overview from the hospice

Southern Utah's only Specialists in Palliative Care and Hospice.

What is Palliative Care?

Most of us, as we age, develop chronic conditions that cannot be cured. Some common long-term condition such as Pain, Age Related Physical Conditions, or Cognitive Decline can be “Managed” with some clinical interventions, and can be "IMPROVED", with the addition of Palliative Care.

Pathway Hospice and Palliative Care can integrate all the traditional clinical therapies that Doctors have prescribed, WITH a robust array of additional, enjoyable and helpful therapies, services and options.

Beyond medications for pain, or anxiety; Beyond personal cares to help manage simple daily activities, like dressing, eating and bathing; Beyond Standard Clinical Care; Pathway can provide Extra-Clinical Care. And we provide it right in your home. 435-477-6999, Let’s discuss what will be most beneficial and meaningful for you.

We can offer:

A wide array of Massage Therapies from just a comforting and personal Hand Massage; to focusing on specific areas of the body and physical conditions, for pain relief, or improved circulation; or Lymphatic Massage to help improve drainage from limbs and reduce swelling; or Whole-Body Massage to help relax and enrich lives. Massage can integrate with prescription pain management drugs to have a better more satisfying outcome.

Physical Therapy beyond the limits of traditional Home Health Standards. Physical Therapy may be a more meaningful option. Increasing range of motion and staying physically active has incredible benefits, increasing circulation, reducing pain, improving body systems, and allowing for more independence.

Companionship and Social Interaction, someone that will be there just to spend time, exclusively for you. Loneliness can be devastating for our elderly population. Making personal connections and being able to truly communicate with others is Palliative, One-On-One time can relieve so many issues and problems that there is no medication for. That time can be spent as you wish, doing your hobbies, playing games, just talking. Let us know the best way for you to spend your time.

Palliative Care could include, Music Therapy, Pet Therapy, Aroma Therapy, Western or Eastern Alternative and Integrative Therapies. Our goal is to help you find the cares, therapies, or services that will make your days better, more fulfilling and enjoyable.

If you qualify, Palliative care is covered by Medicare or Private Insurance. And you are in control, you are the one that makes the decisions, choosing which options are best for you currently, and you may change options in the future.

Frequently asked questions

Answered by Pathway Hospice & Palliative Care

  • How is Palliative Care Different Than Hospice

Hospice has been well defined by Medicare (At least the Minimum Standard that all hospice company must provide). Pathway Always exceeds the minimum, by far. Hospice represents a part of the spectrum of Palliative Care. But the definition of Palliative Care is not limited. Anything that we can do that "Relieves a Symptom", "Makes Us Feel Better" or "Reduces a Problem" (even if it doesn't cure the problem) is Palliative. Pathway Hospice and Palliative Care enhances the standards of Medicare by offering a multitude of additional options to make life better, more enjoyable and rewarding.

  • What resources do you offer patients and families beyond basic care?

Because Patient choice is forefront in our minds, we are finding new proven therapies, or alternative and integrative service, that can enhance the lives of our patients. We engage with the patient and family, to find which of the vast array or options would best suit them. And we are always finding available resources in the community to further enrich the lives of our patients.

  • What makes you stand out from other hospices?

We are Specialists. We are the only company that exclusively focuses on Palliative and Hospice Care in Utah. While other companies offer it as a sideline or added revenue source, Pathway Hospice and Palliative care is the only company that puts care for those most vulnerable front and center.

  • What does care look like for the average patient?

We far exceed the minimum Medicare Standard of Care. Averaging more than 1 nursing visit every week, at least 6 CNA hours a week (more if appropriate), Our doctors personally review and assess each persons condition, in detail, at least every 2 weeks, We use Massage Therapists, Physical Therapists, or Occupational Therapist for almost every patient. Our goal is to find the unique issues that are causing someone or their family stress and try to relieve it. We use housekeepers to give the home a deep cleaning, we've hired window washers because the single most pressing issue for the spouse of a patient was that she knew she would be hosting friends and family in her home and those weren't clean.

  • What is your patient care philosophy?

Patient Choice. That has to be first, patients have the right to choose what their ideal care will be. And we bring a much broader range of choices. We provide the entire range of Clinical Cares, like pharmaceuticals, and qualified practitioners, and care staff, but we also encourage people to consider proven Extra-Clinical options, like Massage therapies, Physical or Occupational therapy. We tune the services to the needs of the needs of each patient, and their caregiver and their family. This is a stressful time for all involved, and if we can relieve burdens and stresses, so the family can spend more time just loving them, that's palliative.

  • What is the history of your hospice?

We started Pathway Hospice and Palliative Care because we want everyone in Southern Utah to have the advantage of a robust Palliative Care Program that supersedes the minimum Medicare Standard of Hospice that is delivered here.
Our own personal experience with Hospice in Southern Utah versus what we had experienced elsewhere, was not what it could have been. We found that 43 other states had introduced Palliative Care and were offering a wider array of services, Utah had not. When we approached existing hospices with the concept and the benefits to the community... No one wanted to change the status quo. We started the process to lead Utah toward a better level of care. As we started to help the community to understand and expect better, KDXU our Local Talk Radio Station approached us to host a 1/2 hour radio program sharing our mission with the community every Wednesday morning at 8:30. We turned them down the 1st 3 times, but have been hosting ElderCare Radio ever since. Bringing useful information and expanding the Senior Community's understanding of what can be available in healthcare. Read Our Story on our website PathwayHospiceCare.com
