What is the history of Mountain View Funeral Home, Memorial Park & Crematory?
1915
Mountain View draws on a rich heritage, beginning in 1915 when James Thompson created the Memorial Park.1942
James' son, J. Arthur Thompson added the funeral home on the cemetery grounds. At the time a revolutionary idea, it was only the second funeral home/cemetery combination in the United States.1956
Arthur's son, Brewer B. Thompson, came to Mountain View. Under his leadership, Mountain View continued to grow. A second funeral chapel was built on the grounds, the operation was computerized, the staff grew in size to 68 full time employees, 80 more acres were acquired, and the company became debt free.2000
Cindy Thompson, 4th generation President of Mountain View built the Celebration of Life Center, which includes the Aspen Chapel and two reception rooms.-Growing Beyond the Family Heritage-
Seeing the need for Mountain View to grow beyond the family heritage from which is began, Cindy arranged for NorthStar Memorial Group to acquire the park. For nearly 100 years, Mountain View Memorial Park has been a part of life for the people of Tacoma.-Continued Expansion-
In the past few years, we have developed an additional urn garden with over 3,000 inurnment spaces and another mausoleum structure, which brings the total of such structures to 10 with over 5,000 casket spaces and over 10,000 niches for cremated remains. The cemetery also includes 5 veterans garden sections and 53 other separate gardens for burial.-Preserving Beauty and Peace-
Mountain View Memorial Park has as array of flora and fauna, including 181 different varieties of trees, 575 rhododendrons, a rose garden and many varieties of birds and wildlife. -
Does a body have to be embalmed before it is buried?
No, embalming is not required for burial. It is always your choice. Your decision may depend on such factors as whether the family selected a service with a public viewing of the body with an open casket; or to enhance the deceased's appearance for a private family viewing; or if the body is going to be transported by air or rail, or because of the length of time prior to the burial.
-
I've heard of Endowment Care or Perpetual Care - what is it?
In short, Endowment Care / Perpetual Care refers to the funds that keep the cemetery grounds beautiful and well-kept, ensuring that your loved one will be taken care of each and every day over the long term. Once the service is over and those in attendance have left the grounds, we want to ensure that peacefulness and beauty are permanent parts of our grounds and Endowment Care makes this possible.
-
Are cemeteries running out of space?
Just like other open spaces, cemeteries have been impacted by the sheer number of people on our planet. However, we can always help you find the space you need, so don’t ever feel that there is not an option to meet your needs.
-
I have my loved one's urn at home on my mantle, is it too late to have a permanent memorial in a cemetery?
It's never too late for a permanent memorial. Many families realize that having their loved one's urn with them at home was not a great idea. Having a permanent resting place for your loved one allows for other friends and family to visit your loved one's memorial too.
-
If I choose cremation, can I still have a permanent memorial in a cemetery?
Yes. In fact, there are more options for cremation memorials than for traditional casket burial. Cremation also allows you to have a permanent memorial at a cemetery, but you can also have a small keepsake urn at home.
