About Late Life Journey

Location
Ashland, OR
Overview from the death doula

My career and experience in serving older adults has covered the spectrum of all the colors in the rainbow over the last 20 years. Working with Hospice, with Marin General Hospital as a spiritual care companion, and as a Geriatric Care Manager in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Currently, I work with End of Life Choices Oregon where I assist individuals who have chosen to use Oregon's Death with Dignity Law. I am registered with the National End of Life Doula Alliance.   As an End of Life Doula, I help clients with support in a myriad of ways. This support can begin as early as when someone receives a terminal diagnosis. As a non-medical support ally, I work to advocate for my clients within the medical system as a patient advocate, assist with creating an end of life plan which might include reviewing one's Advance Directive, and getting other affairs in order; emotional and spiritual support, and other support services as needed.
I hold a Master's Degree in Gerontology from San Francisco State University with a Care Management speciality,  a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of San Francisco.

Frequently asked questions

Answered by Late Life Journey

  • How much experience do you have in your field?

I have been working in this field of care management for older adults and death and dying for 20 plus years. I only work part time now so am limited in how much work I take on. The most important qualities about my experience is that I have had a large clientele under many different situations; I am very confident and professional in working with the medical community and have a lot of experience in working with families; with fear and anxiety, and in planning for the end of life.

  • What is your fee structure and pricing?

Unlike hospice, the cost of a doula is not covered by Medicare. Private insurers do not reimburse for doulas. My charges will vary depending on the number of visits, location, and service requests. Generally, I charge an hourly fee of $60/hour and depending on the situation. I also offer a package fee that would includes an initial visit and consultation with 25 hours of a combination of visits, emails, phone calls, meetings, etc.for $1500.

  • What can families expect when working with you?

I am thorough, detailed, and professional. I always take meticulous notes and keep a record of doctor visits, home visits, medication lists and changes and also note changes in health and status as they occur. I am experienced in working collaboratively with a client's care team team including hospice and, or caregivers involved as well as family members. I listen and I advocate for my client. I know that I am often a part of a larger network of care professionals, but as an objective advocate for my clients, I always discuss in more detail with my client, their wishes, their care plan goals, and based on what they feel is right for them, I will respect that and work with them in creating a more conscious approach to their illness and to their end of life.

  • What services do you specialize in?

With a background in geriatric care management and end of life work over 20 years, I specialize in patient advocacy (liaison with medical professionals) ; end of life planning (advanced directives, care plans, legacy projects and creation, funeral plans and discussions about body disposition (green burial, cremation, traditional burial), grief support and resources, organization of wrapping up one's affairs. If something is not listed, just ask. I do many things for many clients so cannot list them all here!
