Overview from the death doula

I am a trained and certified End of Life Doula and Legacy Creator through International End of Life Doula Association (INELDA). I’ve gained insightful perspective through my work with clients in the Twin Cities, as well as through the Fairview Hospice, Heartland Hospice, N.C. Little Hospice and Our Lady of Peace. I currently serve as the Membership Coordinator and one of the founding members of the Minnesota Death Collaborative. My role as an End of Life Doula is one I hold with honor and humility. I am available to speak about End of Life, VSED and/or Legacy Project support to local communities or via Zoom for those in or out of state.

Frequently asked questions

Answered by Wendy Brown

  • How much experience do you have in your field?

Four years as an active End of Life Doula and a lifetime of study around end of life.

  • What is your fee structure and pricing?

Please see my website for fee information.

  • What can families expect when working with you?

They can expect I will meet them where they are in this process around the end of life journey, as well as my stability during a time of unknown and often fear. I will be both a sounding board and guide as I bring tenderness to a time that requires thought and grace. I will be honest and gentle. I will be there.

  • What services do you specialize in?

I specialize in the role of an End of Life Doula as I work with loved ones and their families around how they want to live until their last breath, including the actively dying process, as well as how they'd like to be honored in the decades ahead through legacy projects. I most recently began supporting clients around VSED, Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking, a legal choice and option.

Q&A

Hi Wendy, I am writing my health care directive and I want to include VSED in my responses so that if I become incapacitated my health care agent will know this is what I want. I'm most concerned that I'll get dementia, will end up in a nursing home, and then people will just feed me even though I want to start VSED. I have mostly read about people who start VSED at home, with the support of a doula or their family, or both. I have no children and if my husband dies before me I may end up in a nursing home at some point. Can end-of-life doulas facilitate VSED for people living in either assisted living or nursing homes? I also have a question about the language to use in my directive--how do I make sure people don't bring food or water to my room, or try to tempt me with it in some way. Could I arrange a consultation with you, to help me with this directive and with trying to plan for the end of my life hopefully long before I have to take any action? – Julie W.
