I am a Patriot Guard Rider Captain. We have been asked to esorst a Veteran to his burial at Sampson. Are we allowed to enter the cemetery as we escort the family? I ask this because a few weeks ago we were not allowed to enter the Bath Cemetery. – Greg S.

My sister and brother-in-law were visiting for a few days. My brother-in-law wanted to take his 4 children to visit Sampson to pay their respects at the graves of two men who served with his father. Upon arrival we parked our cars near a small building that... Read more housed the public bathrooms so our nieces could use them. The rest of us stood around in the small lot waiting for them when a man- William Yale- yelled at us out of a window that we were not allowed there. We were surprised because all info we could find on the place says it’s free and open to the public. Needless to say we were disappointed at the fact we were not allowed to visit the graves and pay our respect to the men my brother-in-law’s father had fought for our freedom with. When I got home I sent an email to the cemetery asking if it was public and explaining why we were there (we, as I have stated above had just arrived and were in the parking lot when William leaned out of the window to scream at us to leave). This is the response I received from William who is the director of the cemetery-
“I don't understand why you would think our wood lots and fields are open for visitors. As I mentioned visitors are welcome to visit the Burial Field daily.
Again, I'm sorry you didn't understand our visitation policies.
Stop at the Guard Shack and read the brown sign. It might be helpful. Additionally, feel free to stop by the Reception Office and we would be glad to discuss the matter with you.

We never said we were going in the woods, never went near the woods, never even saw the woods! He did not tell us we could visit the graves, he did tell us we were not allowed there (that was all he said to us). What this man’s obsession with the woods is, I have no idea. I do know William Yale sent away children who were there to pay respect to men their grandfather faught with right after their grandfather’s death and that is wrong.
This man should have been ashamed of treating these children so poorly but instead of an apology as an answer we got a lecture on where to find the rules for his cemetery. What a joke.
Unless you like being screamed at to leave while standing in the parking lot, I’m sorry to say you should steer clear of William Yale and this cemetery. Read less
