What should people know about when visiting Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery?
This is one of the older cemeteries in the St. John's metro area. As such, there may be some safety hazards due to fallen headstones, depressions in the ground, etc. Visitors enter at their own risk, and should take caution to stay on the main road and pathways as much as possible.
Furthermore, the roads in Mt. Carmel Cemetery are steep, and can pose an issue especially during the winter. Snow clearing in Mt. Carmel Cemetery is only done during the winter as required for burials, so please restrict your driving accordingly.
Outside of these items, the current columbaria in the cemetery are located where the old chapel used to be, and there are several monuments located throughout the cemetery. -

How can I find people in the cemetery?
Our online searchable database (as well as copies of our plot maps) are available on our website at https://www.rcsj.org/cemetery…
Please note that our records are incomplete, largely due to a fire and floods in previous decades, which destroyed a large number of records. Furthermore, some records were unfortunately improperly written and compiled, apart from the past decade or so. To that extent, we may unfortunately not have an available record for the person or plot you are looking for. For further questions or assistance, please contact us at cemetery@rcsj.org -
Can families place headstones or plaques on their plot?
The installation of headstones or plaques on a plot in the Catholic cemeteries in the St. John's metro area is done by approved contractors and monument companies, who are certified under Workplace NL and who have liability insurance to cover any issues that may occur. What is your policy regarding flower beds, trees, bushes, etc.?
Families are allowed to have a flower bed on their plot in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, though they are responsible for maintaining it themselves. The same applies for concrete walls on the plot, crushed stone, etc.
The placement of trees and bushes is not encouraged, as the roots can cause a problem for future burials in the plot, and the placement of any trees or bushes outside the boundary of a plot is not allowed.
