Overview

Camp Butler National Cemetery, situated in Springfield, Illinois, is a significant historical landmark that serves as the resting ground for thousands of military veterans and their families. The cemetery began as a Civil War training base in 1861, and subsequently became a prisoner camp for Confederate soldiers. More than 800 of those who succumbed to disease and cold were buried here, leading to its official designation as a national cemetery in 1862. Today, the cemetery spans 53 acres and is the final resting place to over 30,000 individuals. The site is marked by a notable Confederate memorial and several plaques commemorating not only Civil War soldiers, but also veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Additionally, the cemetery continues its operations, providing interment services for eligible veterans and their spouses.
