What are the options for selling 2 spaces at Sunset View Cemetery? My grandparents purchased the plots in 1956. Both grandparents passed away many years ago and are not buried at Sunset View. Angela Wash — I am writing to formally address my family's recent experience at Sunset View Mortuary during the burial of Marcus D. Oliver on November 14, 2025. It is essential for both local management and corporate leadership to be aware of the significant issues we encountered during this difficult time.

... Read moreWhile we did arrive slightly later than scheduled, we reached the facility at 2 PM, having communicated the traffic delays we experienced on the 880 freeway. Unfortunately, the treatment we received upon arrival was far from acceptable. We felt rushed and disrespected, with a notable absence of compassion from the staff. The lack of personnel on hand to assist us is not our responsibility but yours. When families pay a significant amount of money to lay their loved ones to rest, they deserve the utmost respect and dignity.

The atmosphere created during this experience robbed us of our time and emotional peace. Instead of providing a space for reflection and love, we were met with frustration and anger. Despite informing Linda that we were ready to make the payment and just wanted time with our loved ones without feeling rushed, she indicated that it was okay. However, she simultaneously pressured my sister and other family members by saying, "If you don’t hurry up, we’ll charge you." This two-faced behavior is unacceptable.

As the owner of the plot, I received respect, but my family deserves the same amount of respect, whether they are the owners of the plot or not. The lack of staff support during our recent experience was particularly troubling, as we were left without assistance when we needed it most. There was no one available to help us escort the casket onto the mount, which felt tacky and tasteless. Comments suggesting we needed to hurry to avoid additional charges were inappropriate and disrespectful during such a sensitive time.

Moreover, the claim that there was another funeral scheduled shortly after ours was misleading. There was no other plot open but ours, and this dishonesty only added to our distress and made it harder for us to grieve properly.

In stark contrast, when we buried Marcus's mother, Annie Jean McKinzie, two years ago, we were treated with the utmost care and respect. The staff was compassionate and accommodating, allowing us the time we needed to say our goodbyes. This significant decline in service quality is alarming and suggests a shift from a family-oriented approach to one that prioritizes corporate interests and profit. A cemetery should be a space for honoring loved ones, not a facility that rushes grieving families.

Additionally, I want to bring to your attention the YouTube video from 2017 that portrays Sunset View Mortuary in a light that no longer reflects the reality of our experience on November 14, 2025. The video needs to be updated to acknowledge the absence of compassion and the insistence on rushing families out because of a refusal to hire sufficient staff for opening and closing burial plots. It presents a rushed atmosphere that encourages families to hurry up and bury their loved ones, which is a disservice to the community, especially for African-American families who deserve respect and care during their most vulnerable moments.

I do not know if you, Mr. Pennington, are putting pressure on your sales team or the staff at Sunset View, but there is no longer a family vibe when dealing with the burial of loved ones at the gravesite. You need to revisit how things were in 2015 and compare that to our experience in 2025. Today, we felt degraded, disrespected, and far from the compassionate environment that should be present during such times.

While Linda may have greeted me with a hug, the overall treatment of my family was unacceptable. We felt degraded and disrespected throughout the process.

I feel compelled to share our experience across various platforms to ensure that potential clients are aware of the service we received. I urge both local management and corporate leadership to reflect on how families are treated during their times of mourning. This is not merely a business; it is about the lives and memories of individuals and their loved ones. It is crucial to restore the compassion and dignity that families deserve during such challenging times.
