Richard Alan Kraut, D.D.S., a pioneering oral surgeon, educator, and former chairman of dentistry at Montefiore Medical Center, died peacefully on January 5, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 83 years old. The cause was adenocarcinoma, which he had battled for more than a year.

Dr. Kraut was a devoted father and a formative force in academic dentistry, whose influence extended across generations of clinicians. Over a career spanning decades, he helped shape one of …

Planning is already underway to celebrate Richard's life with family and friends in Lawrence, Kansas in February and with his beloved Montefiore colleagues and New York friends in March. Details to follow. In accordance with his wishes, Richard will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery alongside his late wife, Becky, which will take place as a family gathering in the spring.
